Atom Computing

Senior Microfabrication Engineer

$140,000 – $165,000 per year

TLDR

Own the process architecture for novel, high-frequency optoelectronic devices in quantum computing, mentoring junior staff while advancing internal fabrication capabilities.

At Atom Computing, we build quantum computers using arrays of optically trapped neutral atoms that will empower customers to achieve unprecedented computational breakthroughs. Join a world-class team of scientists, engineers, and business professionals to advance the state-of-the-art in quantum computing. We are seeking a Senior Microfabrication Engineer to serve as our first dedicated fabrication hire, owning the process architecture for novel, high-frequency optoelectronic devices that will enable our next-generation quantum computers. Operating primarily out of the COSINC cleanroom at CU Boulder, you will bridge the gap between device physics and physical hardware by laying out masks, developing processes for exotic optical substrates, and solving the complex challenges of interfacing RF signals with precision optics. In this role, you will also mentor junior staff and help build our internal fabrication capabilities. Job Responsibilities
  • Process Architecture: Design and execute end-to-end cleanroom process flows to create novel optoelectronic devices.
  • Hands-On Fabrication: Execute thin-film deposition, photolithography, wet/dry etching, and metrology to iterate rapidly on device prototypes.
  • Advanced Integration: Lead experimentation on complex processing steps, such as wafer bonding with precise stress control.
  • Novel Fabrication Techniques: Develop and modify tools to extend nanofabrication techniques to nonstandard geometries.
  • Collaboration & Leadership: Work closely with cross-functional teams of physicists, optical engineers, and electrical engineers to integrate these devices into larger optical systems.
  • Experience & Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science or a related field. Advanced degree is a plus.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in a semiconductor, MEMS, or photonics cleanroom environment.
  • Qualifications
  • Experience working autonomously in a shared academic or foundry cleanroom facility.
  • Proficiency with layout software (L-Edit, KLayout, AutoCAD, etc.) for mask design.
  • A self-starter who thrives on solving non-standard fabrication challenges and can pivot between parallel development strategies.
  • Capable of lifting and moving objects that weigh up to 25 pounds.
  • Atom Computing provides a wide variety of perks and benefits, including fully paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for our employees and their dependents. Additionally, unlimited paid time off, 401K company matching, short- and long-term disability, FSA, dependent care benefits, and life insurance.  We also offer drinks, snacks, and catered team lunches in our offices, every day!

The base salary range for this position is between $140,000 - $165,000, commensurate with experience. In addition to salary, we offer an annual bonus and equity in the company.
