Manager, Personalization Machine Learning Science

The Team 

Wayfair Machine Learning Science powers automation & decision support across all Wayfair business units. Our algorithms tackle a varied & broad spectrum of challenges in the Wayfair marketplace; from empowering suppliers to easily add products to our catalog, to enabling our customers to discover and purchase a vast & diverse assortment of home goods. 

The Search & Recommendations Machine Learning Science team is looking for an experienced Machine Learning Senior Manager to lead one of Wayfair’s recommendation science teams. In this role, you’ll be part of the Search & Recommendations leadership. You’ll lead a small team of machine learning scientists and machine learning engineers, leveraging customer behavior and Wayfair’s content and product data to create a tailored customer experience. We are looking for a candidate who would lead the team to build and implement personalized product recommendations, customer understanding, and personalized content targeting strategies using state-of-the-art machine learning and deep learning techniques. 

You’ll own crafting a research agenda and ensuring its execution, constantly improving on the current status quo of our personalization models, and you’ll partner closely with leaders on engineering, analytics, and product management to bring our next generation personalization models to life. Your work will empower Wayfair’s customers to find their home needs faster and more efficiently while helping Wayfair’s suppliers to increase the reach of their products. This is a strategic role: your work will be far reaching, supporting recommendations across our storefront, email, and marketing channels, serving more than a billion recommendations each day. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of ML scientists and ML engineers to develop, test, and deploy machine learning models for personalization
  • Lead the development of algorithms and models for personalized content targeting strategies and dynamic layout generation
  • Collaborate with Product Management and stakeholders in identifying and prioritizing new personalization opportunities and features based on Wayfair’s proprietary data, customer insights, business goals, and data analysis
  • Work closely with engineering partners to integrate any new and improved models into our platform, creating one-to-one personalized experiences for our customers
  • Define and implement best practices for data collection, processing, and model training to ensure high-quality personalization solutions
  • Manage project timelines and resources to ensure timely and successful delivery of personalization initiatives

 

Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or equivalent experience
  • Track record managing a team in a machine learning or data science role
  • You have built, deployed, and maintained multiple machine learning models in production, ideally in a recommender systems context
  • High comfort level with programming skills in Python or Java, and experience working with big-data technology such as BigQuery or Spark; ideally familiarity with cloud-based platforms (we use GCP)
  • Ability to condense technical subject matter for non-technical audiences and to deal with ambiguity in a dynamic environment with shifting priorities
