At Carrum, we are transforming how we pay for, deliver and experience healthcare. If you are passionate about changing healthcare and want to finally get rid of surprise bills, poor quality, and high prices, while thriving in an entrepreneurial, cutting-edge environment, we would love to connect with you.
In 2014 Carrum reinvented the Centers of Excellence (COE) category in digital health. Today, 95% of the US population lives within 50 miles of a Carrum COE and our providers rank in the top 10% nationally. Our team’s execution has been recognized by the venture community and we’ve raised more than $96M in aggregate from investors like OMERS, Tiger Global Management and Wildcat Ventures. Our impact has been externally proven in a 2021 RAND Corporation study and featured as a Harvard Business School (HBS) case study.
We are looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead our Partner Integrations & Automation Pod. It is an exciting time at Carrum as we are moving to a multi-pod structure on our Software team, and this role will be pivotal in establishing our new operating model. Reporting directly to the VP of Engineering, you will have high visibility and strategic influence over how we scale our function.
In this unique "player-coach" role, you will hold a dual mandate: owning our external identity integrations ecosystem and driving internal operational efficiency through automation. You will manage a squad of engineers to streamline how we connect with partners (SSO and embedded solutions), turning one-off requests into scalable, reusable capabilities within our Ruby on Rails (SOA) environment. Simultaneously, you will drive internal operational efficiency by building internal tools that make our Care and Operations teams faster and more effective.
You will act as a bridge between the "business" and the "code." For our partner ecosystem, you will wear the hat of a Solutions Architect and Technical Project Manager, engaging directly with clients to align on technical integration strategies and solution design. You will then drive the execution of these integrations, managing the intake of requests from Client Success and Partnerships. For internal automation initiatives, you will follow a standard Product Management process—partnering with PMs to vet and prioritize the roadmap, ensuring we make our internal teams more effective.
This is a full time position, the salary range for this role is $190,000 - $240,000 depending on level of experience and geographic location.
What you will do:
You’re excited about this opportunity because you will drive impact across five key areas:
1. People Leadership
-
Manage & Mentor: Act as a hands-on people manager responsible for performance management and day-to-day coaching. You will mentor your squad on technical best practices, "solutions" thinking, and long-term career growth.
-
Build the Team: Own the hiring, onboarding, and resource planning for your pod. You have experience managing and optimizing the delivery of a mix of full-time employees and contractors.
-
Foster Culture: Create a psychological safe environment where engineers can do their best work, prioritizing their well-being and professional growth.
2. Agile Operations, Project Delivery Management & Stakeholder/Client Management
-
Operational & Delivery Excellence: You will oversee the complete operational heartbeat of the pod—from facilitating agile ceremonies (stand-ups, planning) to ensure on-time delivery, to managing production health (monitoring, incident response) to meet high uptime SLAs.
-
Cross-Functional Orchestration: You will orchestrate project delivery across teams you don't directly manage (DataOps, Partnerships, Client Success). You will have oversight of the entire integration lifecycle, ensuring dependencies are met and holding cross-functional peers accountable for success.
-
Partner Execution & Solutions Engineering: You will act as the technical face to our partners, defining how we integrate and acting as the filter that turns noisy partner threads into clear engineering tasks. Once work is approved, you own the timeline, resource allocation, and delivery.
-
Engineer the Process: You recognize that code is only part of the solution. You will constantly analyze end-to-end workflows (both partner onboarding and internal ops) to identify non-technical bottlenecks and implement process improvements.
3. Internal Automation & Efficiency
-
High-Impact Internal Systems: Drive organization-wide productivity by optimizing core platforms—from enhancing the Care App UX with AI automation to implementing robust billing and operational systems for back-office efficiency.
-
Entrepreneurial & Product-Led: You will embrace a startup mindset to identify opportunities where engineering can act as a force multiplier, while partnering with Product Management to vet and roadmap these initiatives through a standard product development lifecycle.
4. Technical Leadership & Individual Contributions
-
Own the Secure Architecture: Iterate on the end-to-end architecture for SSO (SAML, OIDC) and partner integrations. You will lead the move away from templatized bespoke code toward a standardized integration platform and ensure your team designs integrations that are secure by default, maintaining strict adherence to HIPAA and SOC2 compliance.
-
Engineering Leadership: Work closely with other Engineering Managers and Product to ensure your team’s work aligns with the broader platform architecture.
-
Stay Hands-On: You are not a clipboard manager. You actively dive into the code to build features and conduct reviews, ensuring high standards for performance and maintainability.
-
Prioritize Developer Experience: You hold yourself and others accountable to spending that extra 10% to deliver great documentation (integration guides, API specs), ensuring our partners have a seamless onboarding experience.
Success in the First Year Looks Like...
-
Accelerate Onboarding: You have reduced the average partner technical integration time by 30%.Drive Efficiency: Achieved a measurable 15% increase in Care Team throughput by automating three high-frequency manual workflows in the Care App.
-
Scale & Elevate the Team: You have successfully built out your team by integrating existing engineers and hiring new key roles, while simultaneously raising the department's technical bar through mentorship and upskilling initiatives.
We’re excited about you because…
-
You have management experience: You have 4+ years of people management experience, specifically leading engineering teams. You have hired and managed a mix of FTEs and contractors.
-
You are a Full-Stack expert: You have 8+ years of total engineering experience (Ruby on Rails backend focus preferred) and are excited to remain hands-on.
-
You have "Solutions" DNA: You have previous experience in enterprise client-facing technical roles such as: Solutions Engineering, Enterprise Engineering, Forward Deployed Engineering. You are comfortable dealing with the messiness of external IT departments and know how to shepherd a project from "vague requirement" to "go-live."
-
You leverage AI for velocity: You are an active adopter of AI developer tools (like GitHub Copilot, Cursor) to accelerate your coding workflow, allowing you to focus less on boilerplate and more on solving complex integration challenges.
-
You have an entrepreneurial mindset: You treat the internal automation domain as your own startup within the company. You actively seek out opportunities to improve the Care App and billing systems, focusing on high-impact changes that drive measurable efficiency gains.
-
You are a Project Manager at heart: You are disciplined about gathering requirements and managing dependencies. You are comfortable running point on execution for partner integrations, while collaborating effectively with Product Management on broader automation strategies.
-
You have strong interpersonal skills: You are organized, empathetic, persistent, and curious, allowing you to build strong relationships across the organization.
-
You know Identity & Data: You have deep experience with SSO (SAML, OIDC), complex data modeling, and secure data exchange protocols (SFTP, API Gateways).
