ERG is seeking a Senior Engineer with energetics processing experience to support energetics and chemical manufacturing processes, including evaluating safe processes, equipment, and facility design; formulating risk mitigation strategies; providing technical expertise in new process startup activities; evaluating standard operating procedures (SOPs); performing malfunction and incident investigations; and interacting with technical customers to provide process engineering and safety expertise. Experience managing projects, facilitating meetings, investigating incidents, and facilitating hazard analyses is required.
This is a fulltime onsite position at the Naval Support Facility (NSF) Indian Head. Indian Head, MD, is approximately 30 miles from Washington, DC, 25 miles from Alexandria, VA, and 60 miles from Fredericksburg, VA.
Job Description:
Provide technical evaluations on a variety of process engineering, process safety, and hazard analysis projects associated with energetics research, development, and manufacturing operations
Plan and execute Preliminary Hazard Analyses (PHAs), Process Hazard Analyses (PrHAs), Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Layer of Protection Analyses (LOPAs), Failure Mode and Effect Analyses (FMEAs), System Hazard Analyses (SHAs), Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRAs), and Operating and Support Hazards Analyses (O&SHAs), and other hazard analysis and risk assessment techniques
Apply root cause analysis and fault tree analysis techniques in executing malfunction and failure analyses and incident investigations
Develop safety, environmental, engineering, and quality documentation for process startup and restart efforts.
Prepare and review SOPs for energetics processing operations
Perform process design tasks, such as reviewing new or as-built drawings, equipment, and/or process specifications and reviewing engineering calculations that support equipment configuration and process condition determinations
Provide other on-site support as needed, including participating in various technical meetings; drafting meeting minutes; performing reviews of technical information, calculations, and previously completed analyses; and performing plant inspections or audits
Provide mentorship and technical guidance to mid- and junior-level engineers supporting task execution
Qualifications and Skills:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field
At least 20 years of relevant experience
Strong technical background in process engineering, process safety, and hazard analysis
Expertise in energetic manufacturing processes is strongly desired
Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with internal/external stakeholders
Excellent verbal/written communication, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills
Experience leading and facilitating teams to perform engineering and safety reviews with various stakeholders, including engineers, operators, and safety and quality representatives
Must currently hold or be able to obtain a Department of Defense Secret-level security clearance
Must be a U.S. citizen as this position is not eligible for Limited Access Authorizations
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
Vertical and horizontal mixing of energetic compounds
Pour and pressure casting of energetic compounds
Energetics reaction chemistry, including batch and continuous reactor configurations
Bench-scale research for propellant and explosives formulations
Pilot-scale manufacturing and production-scale development
Pressing and extrusion of propellants and explosives using mechanical, screw, and ram presses
Machining of propellants and explosives using conventional lathes, mills, saws, and computer numerical control machining centers
