About the role
The Enphase Power System Innovation team in the office of the CTO is responsible for defining, prototyping, and supporting the next generations of Enphase Power system products. The team is an integrated, multi-disciplinary group that is fast-moving and looking for motivated individuals who can contribute and collaborate closely with the team to deliver innovative solutions. As a team member, you will solve some of the most exciting problems in the energy space and help shape the direction of our products. We are looking for a Senior Engineer with a strong background in electrical and insulation design for medium voltage systems.
What you will do
- Design medium voltage insulation systems that minimize electric field concentrations, surface tracking, and dielectric stress leading to partial discharge
- Model and simulate electrostatic behavior using tools such as COMSOL, Ansys Maxwell, or similar finite element analysis platforms to predict PD inception voltage, creepage/clearance performance.
- Conduct partial discharge testing (offline, online, and type test formats) and interpret PD patterns to diagnose insulation defects, voids, or contamination
- Specify materials and insulation technologies (epoxies, polymers, ceramics, laminates, coatings) based on dielectric strength, aging characteristics, and environmental exposure
- Lead failure mode investigations for electrostatic breakdown, insulation degradation, corona discharge, and arc flash events, providing corrective design actions
- Collaborate with cross functional teams (mechanical, power electronics, safety, manufacturing) to integrate electrostatic protection into full product lifecycle
- Develop documentation and design guidelines for PDfree operation, grounding, shielding, and insulation coordination.
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards (IEC 60270, IEC 60664, IEEE 1584, NFPA 70/70E, UL standards, and internal safety requirements)
Who you are and What you bring
- BS/MS/PhD Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or closely related discipline
- Job title and position level will be determined based on the candidate’s experience
- Minimum experience: BS and 5+ years / MS and 3+ years / PhD with electronics design experience for a Senior Engineer
- Strong understanding of electrostatics, dielectric physics, insulation coordination, and medium voltage engineering
- Hands on experience with partial discharge measurement, PD inception/propagation mechanisms, and corona mitigation
- Experience with FEM electrostatic simulation tools (COMSOL, Ansys, CST, or equivalent)
- Knowledge of creepage/clearance design, insulation aging, and high voltage material selection
- Familiarity with industry standards governing PD, arc flash, and high voltage safety
Additional Desired Skills
- Proficiency with multi-physics modeling
- Medium voltage >5kV insulation
- Familiarity with common standards for electrical equipment and energy storage systems
Travel
Occasional travel domestically
