JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Editor, Subscriber Content is responsible for producing fast, distinctive subscriber-first journalism that helps drive conversion and retention, while upholding Newsweek’s editorial standards across text and video. This role sits within the subscriber content operation and will work closely with editorial leadership to ensure Newsweek subscribers receive timely, high-value analysis and commentary on the stories shaping the national and global news agenda. 

This role is primarily focused on conversion and retention, delivering rapid-response commentary and formats that deepen engagement. The Senior Editor, Subscriber Content will contribute to the strategy that supports subscriber acquisition indirectly by creating promotable, high-interest commentary and video that demonstrates subscriber value to non-subscribers. 

They will be expected to identify trending or breaking stories quickly, frame them for a subscription audience, and publish accurate, high-impact commentary under tight deadlines and pressure—often in fast-moving, high-scrutiny news cycles. 

They will produce analytical pieces to camera to promote subscriber content and help translate editorial value into audience-facing formats. This includes developing strong on-camera delivery and working efficiently with internal stakeholders to ensure videos are aligned with editorial standards and brand tone. 

They will assist in producing Newsweek’s subscriber newsletter, including story selection, framing, drafting and/or editing sections, and ensuring the newsletter consistently reflects the day’s most important subscriber priorities in a clear, authoritative voice. They will also develop and implement new storytelling formats suitable for a subscription audience. 

They will be responsible for ensuring high-quality coverage that is accurate, fair, and conforms to accepted standards of journalism. They will perform any other reasonable duties as necessary to meet the needs of the business. 

Working hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday from 7am to 4pm, with occasional weekend and after-hours work. Place of Work: Our office is based in London, but you will have the ability to work from home anywhere in the UK. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Produce rapid subscriber commentary on trending and breaking news, delivering accurate, high-quality analysis under pressure and at speed, with a clear point of view appropriate to Newsweek’s standards and tone. 
  • Line managing direct reports as required. 
  • Demonstrate strong news judgment and agenda awareness across the United States and globally, anticipating which stories will matter to a subscription audience and identifying fresh angles quickly. 
  • Create and publish promotional video, including analytical pieces to camera that help market subscriber value and support subscriber engagement initiatives. 
  • Support production of newsletters, contributing to daily/regular workflow including curation, drafting, editing, headline/subject-line thinking, and packaging, in coordination with editorial and subscription stakeholders. 
  • Maintain and elevate editorial standards, applying strong editing discipline, accuracy checks, and consistency in style; escalate concerns appropriately and contribute to continuous improvement of quality. 
  • Apply media-law awareness in daily decision-making, including defamation risk, privacy considerations, reporting restrictions, copyright/fair use basics, and other relevant legal/standards issues. 
  • Use AI tools responsibly in line with editorial best practices—demonstrating sound judgment on verification, attribution, accuracy, and appropriate human oversight. 
  • Collaborate across teams (editorial leadership, video, newsletters, audience, product, and marketing as appropriate) to ensure subscriber content is timely, promotable, and aligned with business goals. 
  • Perform any other reasonable duties as necessary to meet the needs of the business. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrable, high-level knowledge of the news agenda in the United States and internationally. 
  • Significant experience in people management at a digital news company. 
  • Demonstrable experience writing quickly and accurately in breaking news situations under pressure, including the ability to make fast, defensible editorial decisions. 
  • Demonstrable experience creating and using video as a promotional and editorial tool, including delivering analytical pieces to camera and working to tight turnaround times. 
  • Significant experience running or helping to run a news-gathering operation, including prioritization, coordination, and editorial leadership in live news environments. 
  • Demonstrable experience maintaining and improving editorial standards. 
  • Strong working knowledge of media law and risk-aware editorial decision-making. 
  • Demonstrable experience using AI tools responsibly, with clear understanding of limitations, verification requirements, and editorial accountability. 
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the professionalism to operate calmly and effectively under deadline pressure.
