This role ensures the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of both structured and unstructured data by applying governance frameworks, access controls, classification standards, and retention policies. By aligning data security initiatives with EQ Bank’s strategic goals, such as digital innovation, regulatory compliance, and customer trust, the role plays a critical part in safeguarding sensitive information and enabling secure business operations. It supports the bank’s transformation efforts by embedding security into cloud platforms, collaboration tools, and core banking systems. Key outcomes include the successful deployment of security guidelines, enhancement of database protections, and enforcement of data retention standards. These achievements will strengthen EQ Bank’s risk posture, improve operational resilience, and ensure adherence to industry regulations and best practices. The Core Responsibilities!
  • Establish Structured Data Security Guidelines - Define and enforce security protocols for databases and structured data repositories.
  • Assess and Pilot Database Security Tools - Evaluate existing and emerging tools for database protection and lead proof-of-concept initiatives.
  • Enhance Data Classification Controls - Implement labeling and classification mechanisms for structured data and cloud-based fileservers.
  • Develop Unstructured Data Security Guidelines - Create and maintain security standards for platforms including SharePoint, Azure Files, and OneDrive.
  • Lead Fileserver Migration Projects - Oversee migration initiatives to SharePoint, ensuring implementation of access controls and sensitivity labels on new sites.
  • Conduct SharePoint Access Audits - Perform access reviews and audits across designated SharePoint sites to identify and remediate risks.
  • Strengthen Data Access Governance - Collaborate with infrastructure and business teams to ensure robust access governance.
  • Implement Data Retention Policies Define and apply retention standards across Exchange, Teams, Copilot, OneDrive, and SharePoint platforms.
  • Let's Talk About You!
  • Bachelors in computer science or related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in data security, governance, or related roles
  • Expertise in Azure data security, including both structured (e.g., Azure SQL, Dataverse) and unstructured (e.g., Azure Files, Blob Storage) environments
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft 365 ecosystem (SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams)
  • Experience with database security tools and classification frameworks
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance frameworks, including PIPEDA, GDPR, OSFI guidelines, and NIST standards
  • Ability to leverage AI capabilities to enhance data security operations, automate governance processes, and improve risk detection and response
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or equivalent are a plus
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal guidance and supervision.
  • Ability to adapt to constantly changing technical, regulatory, and compliance environments.
  • The incumbent is expected to interact with all employees including executives and thus good verbal and written skills are important.
  • Experience working in a banking or financial services environment is an asset.
  • Ability to think out of the box for solutions to technical problems.

    The incumbent will be working hybrid and in office time will be spent working from Equitable Bank’s additional office space located at 2200-25 Ontario Street, Toronto, ON.
