About the role:

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Senior Data Engineer to help design, build, manage, and operate the infrastructure behind our healthcare data platform. You will spend as much time building reliable, scalable infrastructure as you will working with the data that flows through it. You’ll work with diverse healthcare datasets and contribute to a platform that will support our analytics product, as well as future GenAI use cases. 

You will be responsible for building pipelines, enabling new platform features to help accelerate our Data Science team, and contributing to architectural design decisions. Data will be integrated into systems such as Snowflake, Postgres, or Databricks for downstream analytics, requiring high availability, discoverability, quality, and throughput, as well as long-term extensibility. 

Location: This role is remote with a strong preference for candidates within commuting distance of Atlanta, GA; Philadelphia, PA; or Nashville, TN. We will also consider applicants based in other U.S. locations.

Reports to: Manager, Data Engineering

As a Senior Data Engineer at Trella, you will:

  • Design processes to consolidate data from multiple sources into a single source of truth.
  • Contribute to data governance policies, standards, and procedures to ensure data quality, security, HIPAA and other regulatory compliance.
  • Identify and optimize performance bottlenecks in ETL/ELT pipelines – ensuring the long-term scalability of pipelines.
  • Work closely with Data Scientists, Engineers, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into high-value, technical solutions.

  • Data Modeling & Warehousing Concepts
    • OLAP vs OLTP
    • Normalized vs Denormalized data, one big table
    • SCDs
    • Medallion Architecture
    • Multi-Tenant Architecture
  • Tools & Technology
    • Experience working with dbt or SQLMesh
    • Experience with at least one major data platform and warehousing tool such as Databricks or Snowflake
    • Containerization (Docker)
    • Terraform
  • Security & Compliance
    • Role based access control, audit logging, and data governance
    • Knowledge of data security, encryption at rest/in transit, and tokenization
    • Prior experience working with PHI/PII and experience working in audited environments
  • Healthcare Domain Knowledge (nice to have)
    • HIPAA, SOC2, and HITRUST compliance requirements and implementation
    • Healthcare interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7)
    • EHR operational data and claims data processing experience
