Mama Money

Senior Data Analyst

TLDR

Become the go-to person for deep data analysis and experimentation across the business, leveraging complex behavioral data to drive actionable insights.

Who we are: Mama Money  is a growth-stage fintech on a mission to improve the financial lives of migrants and underserved communities across Africa and beyond. What started in 2015 as a cross-border payments service has grown into a multi-product financial platform. We give people the tools to send, save, and manage money — on their own terms, at a socially fair price. Mama HQ is in beautiful Cape Town, South Africa. We're 153 people strong (and counting), representing 19 countries across Africa, Asia, the UK, and Europe. From remittances to a growing range of financial products, everything we build is in service of people who deserve better. Our culture reflects that same commitment. We look after our team the way we want them to look after our customers. "Just be lekker!" means we trust our talented, diverse people to do what's right and make it happen — simply and with heart. We've earned a few accolades, built lasting partnerships, and grown our reach in ways we're proud of. We've had good times and tough times, but our focus has never shifted. People over profit, always. We’re looking for a Senior Data Analyst to join our Data team and become the go-to person for deep analysis, experimentation, and decision support across the business. You’ll work closely with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Customer Success teams to turn complex behavioural and transactional data into clear, actionable insight. As our Senior Data Analyst you will:
  • Design, run, and analyse A/B tests and other experiments across the customer lifecycle; from acquisition and conversion through to retention and reactivation.

  • Build cohort, funnel, and retention analyses that uncover what's driving customer behaviour and where the biggest opportunities sit.

  • Lead deep-dive investigations into commercial performance, customer churn, fraud patterns, and product engagement.

  • Translate ambiguous business questions into structured analytical problems, and the answers into clear recommendations.

  • Present findings to senior stakeholders in a way that's clear, honest, and decision-ready; not just charts, but conclusions.

  • Build and maintain self-service dashboards and reports that give teams the data they need, when they need it.

  • Develop a deep understanding of customer acquisition, conversion, retention, commercial performance, and user experience metrics.

  • Work alongside the Product and Development teams to shape and deliver on the data roadmap.

  • Partner with Data Engineers on data quality, modelling, and pipeline reliability, also flagging gaps and helping define what "good" looks like.

  • Support Customer Success, Commercial, Marketing, and Compliance teams with ad hoc analysis and reporting.

  • Help create and enforce policies around data governance, quality, and responsible use.

  • Identify opportunities to improve how we collect, model, and surface data across the business.

  • Stay close to the customer journey and be curious about how people experience our product and what the data says about it.

  • Champion experimentation as a core part of how we make decisions.

  •

You’ll be working with (or alongside) a stack that includes:
  • Cloud & infrastructure: AWS (EKS, EC2, S3), Kubernetes, Terraform.

  • Data ingestion & processing: AWS DMS, EMR, and EC2-based pipelines writing to S3.

  • Querying & modelling: Athena for querying S3 data, dbt for transformation and modelling, SQL throughout.

  • Reporting & BI: Tableau as the primary reporting layer, with Python for deeper analysis.

  • Product & customer tooling: Zendesk and internal CRM systems, product analytics platforms.

  • Ways of working: Agile delivery, cross-functional squads, async-friendly documentation.

  • Qualifications and experience:
  • 4+ years in a Data Analyst or Analytics Engineer role, ideally in fintech, e-commerce, SaaS, or another high-volume consumer business.

  • Advanced SQL. you can write complex queries, optimise them, and reason about underlying data models.

  • Strong experimentation experience where you’ve designed and analysed A/B tests, understand statistical significance, sample sizing, and common experimentation pitfalls.

  • Cohort and behavioural analysis:  you’re comfortable building retention curves, funnel analyses, LTV models, and segmentation.

  • BI tools: hands-on experience with Tableau (preferred) or another major BI platform such as Power BI, Looker, or Metabase.

  • Python or R for analysis (Pandas, statsmodels, scikit-learn or equivalent).

  • Storytelling: you can take a messy question and come back with a clear, honest, decision-ready answer.

  • Stakeholder skills: comfortable working across Product, Engineering, and Operations.
