About the Role
At MezTal, the Senior Controller is a trusted financial leader responsible for safeguarding the financial integrity of a 41-community portfolio while enabling smart, scalable growth. This role blends hands-on execution with strategic leadership, ensuring disciplined controls, accurate reporting, strong cash management, and actionable financial insights.
The Senior Controller partners closely with executive leadership, operations, and external stakeholders, turning complex financial data into clear decisions that move the business forward.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Team Oversight
- Lead, mentor, and engage the accounting and finance team, fostering accountability, performance, and continuous improvement.
- Set clear expectations and provide guidance across AP, AR, General Ledger, Treasury, and Payroll functions.
- Represent Finance in leadership meetings, contributing to enterprise-level strategy and execution.
Accounting Operations & Close Management
- Own and oversee month-end close across 41 buildings, ensuring timely, accurate, and audit-ready results.
- Maintain full oversight of AP, AR, GL, Treasury, and Payroll operations across the portfolio.
- Ensure consistency, accuracy, and scalability of accounting processes across all entities.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Oversee the preparation and review of financial statements, ensuring full compliance with US GAAP, IFRS, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, mitigating risk and ensuring financial integrity.
- Lead financial reporting for investors, partners, lenders, and executive stakeholders.
- Support audits and external reviews with well-documented, reliable financial data.
Cash Management & Banking
- Lead cash management strategy across 41 buildings, ensuring liquidity, visibility, and disciplined execution.
- Manage and strengthen banking relationships, including approvals, reporting, and financial negotiations.
- Oversee cash flow analysis, forecasting, and funding needs.
Strategic Financial Planning
- Drive budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial planning in partnership with leadership.
- Analyze financial trends, performance, and variances to support informed business decisions.
- Translate financial insights into clear recommendations for operational and strategic initiatives.
Cross-Functional Partnership & Projects
- Partner closely with Operations, Marketing, and Corporate teams to align financial strategy with business goals.
- Lead and execute special projects, integrations, and process improvements.
- Support growth initiatives with financial modeling, scenario analysis, and risk assessment.
Insurance & Tax Oversight
- Ensure proper oversight of insurance coverage, renewals, and compliance.
- Review and monitor tax calculations, filings, and obligations, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, Master’s degree preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including senior leadership roles.
- Proven experience overseeing multi-entity, multi-location portfolios at scale.
- Strong command of US GAAP, with working knowledge of IFRS.
- Hands-on experience managing AP, AR, GL, Treasury, Payroll, and Cash Management.
- Demonstrated success leading complex month-end close processes.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate data into executive-level insights.
- Executive presence and communication skills, comfortable presenting to investors and senior stakeholders.
- Fully bilingual in English and Spanish.
