We have an opening for a Senior Cloud Development Engineer. You will be a member of the Cloud Center of Excellence integrated project team where you will design, implement, and support the cloud infrastructure and AI services to provide a rapid, secure, and cost-effective solutions for the laboratory. You will play a critical role in enabling the workforce to leverage cloud and AI technologies. You will be responsible for cloud governance, security, and AI platform deployment. This position is in the Enterprise Infrastructure Services (EIS) Division within the Computing Directorate, in support of LivIT.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

This position will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will 

  • Deploy and manage cloud and AI infrastructure including EC2, VPC, S3, Bedrock, SageMaker, and RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) architectures and knowledge bases.
  • Leverage application development skills using Python, AWS CDK, Boto3 to automate cloud and AI service deployment.
  • Design and maintain cloud native CI/CD and AI pipelines integrating foundation models with enterprise data sources.
  • Develop tools, scripts, and templates that automate cloud security controls, governance, compliance validations, and operational processes.
  • Collaborate with systems administrators, developers, stakeholders, and leadership to develop solutions for cloud infrastructure provisioning, monitoring, management, and troubleshooting.
  • Implement and maintain cloud security best practices, ensuring proper access controls and permissions for both traditional and AI workloads.
  • Engage with laboratory scientists, researchers, and developers to understand their workloads and enable cloud and AI technologies.
  • Draft and publish infrastructure architectural artifacts and assets.
  • Present and communicate solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.4 level 

  • Evaluate and integrate emerging AI technologies and tools in support of strategic cloud initiatives.
  • Contribute to the definition and development of AI strategies that support LivIT’s goals and deliver value for our customers.
  • Serve as a mentor to and share knowledge with team members to enhance AI skills and abilities across the organization. 
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Significant experience in AWS core services, such as API Gateway, S3, EC2, Lambda, SNS, SQS, VPC, CloudWatch, AWS RDS, or DynamoDB.
  • Significant experience with AI/ML platforms and services, such as AWS Bedrock, SageMaker or vector databases.
  • Significant experience implementing cloud services and automation using tools, such as Python, AWS CDK, AWS CLI, SAM, or CloudFormation.
  • Fundamental understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, event-driven architecture using languages, such as .NET, Java or Python.
  • Advanced knowledge of security best practices in AWS using IAM, SCP, KMS, GuardDuty, Config, or OAuth.
  • Advanced knowledge of infrastructure as code (IaC) using AWS CloudFormation, Terraform, CDK, or CI/CD tools such as CodePipeline, Jenkins, GitLab.
  • Advanced experience with Kubernetes, ECS, or EKS.
  • Advanced communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain and advise senior management.

Additional qualifications at the SES.4 level 

  • Expert knowledge of GenAI tools & frameworks, LLM’s, and agentic AI.
  • Highly advanced hands-on experience with at least two automation tools, frameworks, or Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) platforms, such as Ansible, Terraform, Kubernetes, Puppet, Jenkins, or comparable solutions. 
  • Extensive experience serving as a mentor to team members, sharing expertise to enhance AI skills and capabilities across the organization. 

Qualifications We Desire

  • Exceptional relationship building, collaboration and communication skills with a proven ability to interpret customer requests to develop system requirements.
  • AWS or Azure cloud certifications (Solutions Architect / DevOps Engineer / GenAI Developer).
  • Experience using cloud management or cloud FinOps tooling to manage commercial cloud environments and services.
