About the Role

We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join one of our core teams at Klar, where you’ll help build the systems powering the future of digital banking.

This is a full-time, remote role, ideally suited for candidates based in the EU or able to collaborate within EU time zones. You’ll be working on scalable, high-impact backend services that are central to our platform. From designing robust architectures to improving system performance, your work will directly contribute to making digital banking more efficient and accessible.

What you can expect: 

• Write correct, efficient, clean, robust, and maintainable code (Mostly in Java 21+) 
• Write unit, integration, and end-to-end tests to prevent current errors or future regressions 
• Participate in code review to learn from others and to teach them as well 
• Prototype new technologies and libraries that could save time and effort 
• Write clear and concise documentation for users of your systems 
• Identify common problems between multiple systems and develop common solutions via libraries 
• Create designs for new systems and features of moderate complexity 
• Make time estimates to implement designs that can aid in future planning 
• Work on core systems with real business impact
• Collaborate with a highly skilled, international team
• Take ownership of meaningful technical challenges
• Contribute to a product that’s transforming financial services
  
• Mentor junior engineers 

What we are looking for:

• You are a senior engineer with experience in architecture, design, implementation and deployment of business critical systems. 
• AI Coding Tools: Proven proficiency in leveraging modern AI development workflows to accelerate delivery and maintain code quality. You should be a 'power user' of tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot (Agent Mode) or Cursor.
• Modern Java: Deep expertise in Java (21+) and the Spring Boot ecosystem.
• You are passionate about simplifying complex problems with innovative solutions which increases efficiency and saves cost. 
• Experience with PostgreSQL or other relational databases, Apache Kafka, Docker
• At least 5 years of experience with microservice architectures, synchronous REST communication over HTTP, and asynchronous communication over Apache Kafka
• Deep understanding of database transactions and locking mechanisms.
• Knowledge of algorithms and data structure for distributing loads like sharding, leadership election, and more. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• 2 years of experience with logging and metrics technologies: Prometheus, Grafana, Kibana 
• 1 year of experience with the following infrastructure technologies: AWS, Github Actions, Kubernetes, Istio, Terraform, Terragrunt
• Experience with the Fintech domain or high paced startup.
