Senior Backend Engineer - Edge

TLDR

Design and implement scalable APIs and backend services for an AI-powered travel assistant while driving product innovation and ensuring system reliability.

Navan is transforming the $56B business travel market with the launch of Navan Edge, our new AI-powered, hyper-personalized travel assistant. We are looking for a Senior Backend Software Engineer to join our team and build the robust, scalable infrastructure that powers this conversational experience.

In this role, you won’t just be writing code; you will be building the "executive assistant" that every frequent business traveler deserves. You will design the APIs and backend services that bridge the gap between complex global travel infrastructure and a simple, "swipe-and-done" conversational interface. If you are passionate about AI, distributed systems, and building products that users rely on in real-time, this is the role for you.

What You’ll Do:

  • Architect for AI: Design and implement highly scalable APIs and backend services that enable our AI agents to book flights, hotels, and manage complex travel itineraries in real-time.
  • Drive Product Innovation: Work closely with product and design teams to translate complex traveler needs into intuitive, "chat-first" experiences.
  • Ensure Reliability: Build, test, and monitor resilient systems that provide 24/7 service to road warriors around the globe.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Technical Excellence: 5+ years of experience in backend development with deep expertise in API design and distributed systems.
  • Ownership Mentality: A track record of shipping production-quality code, including comprehensive testing, monitoring, and documentation.
  • Problem-Solver: A passion for leveraging technology to simplify complex, messy, and manual processes.
  • Collaborative Spirit: Excellent communication skills to work across cross-functional teams (Product, Design, AI/ML) to deliver high-impact features.
  • Tech Stack: Experience with Java, AWS, distributed systems, and modern ORM technologies (e.g., Hibernate, Spring Framework) is a major plus.
  • Growth Mindset: An ability to thrive in a fast-paced, "startup-within-a-company" environment, helping us iterate rapidly on the Navan Edge roadmap.
