About the Role

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll be a key technical leader within our engineering team, working closely with product, frontend engineers and stakeholders across the business to solve complex customer challenges.

This role goes beyond feature development. You’ll play a central part in shaping our backend architecture, leading technical migrations, and modernising our PHP codebase through clean, strongly typed implementations using modern frameworks and best practices.

You’ll also provide mentorship to fellow engineers, help uplift engineering standards across the team, and contribute to building scalable, reliable and well-documented systems.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Designing and implementing robust backend solutions that balance customer needs with business outcomes
• Leading architectural improvements and technical migrations of large PHP codebases
• Building scalable, high-performance and well-documented APIs
• Championing clean, maintainable, strongly typed code and engineering best practices
• Providing hands-on mentorship and technical leadership to team members
• Collaborating across product, frontend, QA and business teams in an agile environment
• Supporting continuous improvement through knowledge sharing and technical innovation

What You’ll Bring

• Proven experience refactoring and modernising large PHP codebases using frameworks such as Laravel or Symfony
• Strong commitment to clean architecture, code quality and strongly typed implementations
• Professional experience designing and building scalable, production-grade APIs
• Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to break complex challenges into practical solutions
• Strong communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders
• A proactive mindset with a strong sense of ownership and accountability
• Ability to balance technical excellence with business priorities

Nice to Have

• Experience mentoring engineers or leading technical initiatives
• Background working in cross-functional agile teams
• Experience modernising legacy systems
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines
• Experience using Docker and Kubernetes
