Position Information

SEARCH has an immediate opening for a Senior Archaeologist with extensive experience in geophysical sensing survey methodologies to support archaeological projects and utilities work. This position is based out of our Carnegie, PA office.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform and lead archaeological surveys using ground-penetrating radar (GPR), magnetometer, metal detector, and other remote-sensing instruments.
  • Appropriately process and interpret geophysical data to identify archaeological resources. Apply reasoning to evaluate the extent and integrity of resources.
  • Appropriately process and interpret geophysical data to identify and map buried utilities.
  • Read survey plans and utility records to identify potential utilities in the project area.
  • Use appropriate tools to mark utility locations in the field
  • Develop and implement appropriate geophysical remote sensing survey methodologies and research designs.
  • Develop geophysical remote sensing and archaeological resource survey reports at Phase I, II and III reporting levels.
  • Use or review GIS data to organize, interpret, and document field research. 
  • Record accurate, organized, and clear field notes, maps, drawings, logs, forms, tables, databases, artifact bags, box labels, and other project documentation. 
  • Use electronic and traditional navigational equipment (GPS, mobile device equipped with ArcGIS Field Maps, and compass) to determine project limits, record fieldwork, document findings, and communicate progress. 
  • Administer the project health and safety plan and participate in office and field training. Offer recommendations for improvement to Health & Safety Manager. 
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field.
  • Completion of an accredited archaeological field school and/or six months of field experience.
  • Minimum five years of professional archaeological field experience encompassing some supervisory experience. 
  • Minimum of one year of experience utilizing GPR and other remote-sensing equipment.
  • Experience conducting utility locates and cemetery delineation preferred.
  • Ability to travel for extended periods of time and maintain a valid driver’s license, a good driving record, and access to reliable transportation.
  • Ability to obtain government security clearance.
