The Mission of the AOCS Software & GNC Engineer

You ensure that our satellites always point towards the right direction enabling high-quality images.

This role is essential for maximizing the operational time and performance of ICEYE's satellite constellations. By improving satellite agility, optimizing pointing accuracy, and ensuring the reliability of the Attitude and Orbit Control Systems (AOCS), this role directly increases the quality of the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data we deliver to our customers. This is the core "why" - to elevate our mission success and make our services consistently available.

The Senior AOCS/Robotics Engineer acts as the ultimate guardian of AOCS health and predictability. The role achieves this by proactively enhancing hardware selection and anomaly resolution processes, and by bringing deep, systematic control systems expertise to troubleshooting in-orbit issues. Crucially, the engineer will also make AOCS knowledge clear across the organization, enabling faster, data-driven decisions that strengthen the entire engineering team and standardize reliable operations.

Who We Are

ICEYE delivers space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities to governments and allied nations. This includes sovereign and turnkey ISR missions leveraging ICEYE’s world-leading synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite technology, as well as access to data from the world’s largest SAR satellite constellation. These capabilities enable partners to detect and respond to critical changes anywhere on Earth with unprecedented speed and accuracy – day or night and in any weather, supported by ultra high-resolution imagery and high-frequency revisits.

As a trusted partner for defense, intelligence, security, and maritime domain awareness, ICEYE’s near real-time data creates a tactical advantage for mission-critical operations. Designed for dual use, the platform also serves civil protection and commercial users for natural-catastrophe intelligence, insurance, maritime monitoring (including oil-spill detection), and finance, contributing to global security and community resilience.

ICEYE operates internationally with offices in Finland, Poland, Spain, Japan, the UAE, Greece, and the US. The company has more than 900 employees, inspired by the shared vision of improving life on Earth by becoming the global source of truth in Earth Observation.

Expected outcomes of the role:

  • Maximized AOCS Availability: By careful hardware selection, systemic improvements to automatic anomaly resolution processes and finally going hands-on with an oscilloscope in electronics lab the role ensures that satellite constellations delivered by ICEYE are operational and always available for imaging.
  • Increased Imaging Performance and Mission Success: The role will directly drive higher quality SAR data and mission success by optimizing satellite agility and pointing accuracy through hardware selection and systemic improvements.
  • Enhanced Organizational AOCS Proficiency: By making AOCS domain knowledge transparent and accessible across the organization, the role will foster data-driven decision-making and enable more efficient, informed cross-functional support, ultimately making the entire organization more effective.
  • Robust and Predictable AOCS Operations: The establishment of well-defined and accepted processes for anomaly handling, resolution, and AOCS component acceptance ensures predictable, reliable, and standardized operations.

Requirements

  • Thinking from a first-principles mindset - your work will often involve resolving in-orbit anomalies, which you will need to tackle in a systematic manner to understand their root-cause and propose solutions to mitigate those in the future.
  • Proven track record of owning cross-domain systems involving feedback control loops over their complete lifecycle.
  • Understanding of AOCS fundamentals - what are the functions the system performs, under what assumptions and constraints it operates, and how their violation impacts performance and stability.
  • Understanding of control fundamentals and state estimation.
  • Demonstrated broad knowledge across multiple engineering disciplines including controls, mechanical and electronics. AOCS is an electromechanical system in the and requires broad perspective to understand it fully.

ICEYE is building and operating its own commercial constellation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites with SAR data already available to customers. These satellites can take images of Earth at any time – even when it’s cloudy or dark. Information derived from these images will help our customers understand the world better and help them make more intelligent decisions. We launched the world’s first SAR microsatellite in January 2018 and have raised $152M in financing to date.We are a Finnish based international New Space company with employees from roughly 30 countries and subsidiaries in the US, UK and Poland. Our team is a tight-knit group of experts from a range of areas including engineering, software development, and radar technology. We’re innovative, driven, and strive for excellence in everything we do. We don’t listen to people who say it can’t be done: we go and do it!
