Safety & Reliability Engineer
TLDR
Contribute to the development and certification of zero-emission aircraft propulsion systems by performing safety analyses and reliability engineering within multidisciplinary teams.
We are seeking a capable Safety and Reliability Engineer to join ZeroAvia based in Kemble. This role combines system safety assessment with reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) engineering, supporting the development and certification of advanced aerospace systems.
This is a critical position supporting the delivery of certified, zero‑emission aircraft propulsion systems, directly contributing to ZeroAvia’s mission. The role works closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to produce robust, compliant safety justifications and credible reliability evidence for complex and novel technologies.
Requirements
- Conduct System Safety Analyses in accordance with ARP4761A, including FHA, PSSA, SSA, FTA, FMECA, CCA, PRA, and ZSA
- Develop and execute reliability predictions and analytical models to support RAM targets and certification objectives
- Define Built‑In‑Test (BIT) coverage and system health monitoring requirements, embedding observability into system architectures
- Generate clear, verifiable safety and reliability requirements aligned with programme and airworthiness objectives
- Define and recommend reliability test strategies, including RDGT and qualification/demonstration approaches
- Analyse in‑service reliability data to drive product improvement and inform maintenance and spares strategies
- Develop and communicate robust safety arguments for complex systems (e.g. fuel cell technologies) to internal and external stakeholders
- Support certification activities, including regulatory engagement, familiarisation meetings, and technical reviews
Experience & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering; aerospace, safety, or reliability specialisation preferred
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in safety and/or reliability engineering within aerospace or a regulated industry
- Strong knowledge of ARP4761A safety assessment processes (e.g. FHA, FTA, FMEA/FMECA, CCA)
- Proven experience performing reliability analyses, including prediction, FMECA, FTA, and PoF
- Working knowledge of reliability standards (e.g. MIL‑HDBK‑217F, FIDES, Telcordia)
- Experience defining BIT strategies and system health monitoring architectures
- Familiarity with ARP4754 systems development processes and safety‑critical certification frameworks
- Understanding of aerospace certification (e.g. CS‑23, CS‑E) and awareness of DO‑178C / DO‑254

ZeroAvia is a leader in zero-emission aviation, flying the world's largest hydrogen-electric aircraft since September 2020. Its focus is the design and commercialization of hydrogen-powered aviation solutions to address a variety of markets, initially targeting short-haul, sub-regional commercial flights up to 500 miles. To date, ZeroAvia has secured the UK CAA and FAA experimental permit to fly for its 6-seat aircraft powered by hydrogen-electric powertrain passed significant flight tests and is on track for commercial deliveries by 2024. Its achievements to date were rewarded by the UK prime minister by inviting ZeroAvia as a member of the UK Jet Zero Council.ZeroAvia’s powertrain development focuses on integrating hydrogen storage tanks, fuel cell systems, and electric motors, delivering a solution that will be not only without carbon emissions but also cheaper to operate. Commercializing the solution requires the establishment of a new clean aviation ecosystem, encompassing hydrogen production from renewable energy sources and tackling public perception of safety.
