The Safety Division in the Water Utility is seeking a Safety Officer to help protect a workforce of 1,044 authorized positions operating in high-risk, highly regulated environments, including water and wastewater treatment plants, construction sites, and laboratories. This position is a proactive and highly visible role that partners with supervisors and frontline employees across seven divisions to shape how safety programs, policies, and training are developed, implemented, and sustained. The work of the Safety Officer directly reduces occupational injuries and illnesses, strengthens emergency preparedness and response, ensures regulatory compliance with federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations, and supports the continuity of essential public water and wastewater services the community depends on every day.

Additional job information:

  • This is a Full-Time position working 40 hours a week.
  • Work Schedule is Monday – Friday, with the possibility of on-call during emergencies.
  • Primary work location will be at the New City Hall.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Safety Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Business or Public Administration or related field
  • At least (3) three years of increasingly responsible experience in conducting safety and health audits and/or inspections
  • Valid Driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ASP certification or other related certifications. If no certification, must be able to obtain a safety certification within 1 year of hire (ASP, CSP, CHST, CSM etc.)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs. (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Extensive presentation and/or safety training experience
  • Previous incident investigation experience
  • Ability to organize and analyze data

The Safety Officer job responsibilities include:

  • Establishes a lead role in key utility-wide safety and environmental health projects, including identifying and planning strategic program needs, leading and training Water personnel, and identifying leading illness, injury, and loss priorities.
  • Researches and interprets proposed and existing safety and environmental standards, policies, and practices to determine impact on the utility.
  • As directed by management, oversees and conducts divisional safety and health program audits to ensure the consistent implementation of safety and health programs. Tracks and ensures corrective actions are implemented.
  • Conducts and provides research into safety training requirements and assists with the development of effective safety and health training. Assists with planning the efficient delivery of value-added safety training throughout the entire utility.
  • Conducts in-depth illness, injury, and vehicle incident data analysis and assists with preparing reports.
  • Assists with the identification and development of database information and manages data/reporting software systems.
  • Leads departmental workgroups in drafting operating procedures and participates in design reviews.
  • Represents Fort Worth Water's safety and health interests in peer/community/industry groups.
  • Maintains and continually implements federal emergency response plans and assists in coordinating Water emergency response exercises and drills.
  • Identifying potential hazards in the workplace through regular inspections, risk assessments, and audits at each center and inspections.
  • Conducting thorough investigations into accidents, injuries, and near-misses to determine root causes and prevent recurrence.
