  1. Purpose


Reporting to the Exploration Manager, the Safety/Ert Officer provide ongoing safety training to support Exploration team and assist with the implementation, management and ongoing improvement of health and safety system.

 

  1. Main responsibilities and duties
  • Actively contribute to build all Exploration site as a safe working environment.
  • Conduct planned/unplanned inspections of Exploration site, mobile equipment and tools.
  • Conduct inductions
  • Contribute to maintain high standard safety culture.
  • Ensure work processes are free from safety and health hazard and that subordinates are trained to ensure safety.
  • Drive departmental health and safety goals.


 Technical and functional for the role

  • Conduct exploration inductions and site wide inductions
  • Organize alcohol tests on all Exploration site and maintain record.
  • Assist in incident investigations.
  • Assist the team and workers in assessing risks related to tasks and work areas.
  • Assist the team in developing and implementing safe work procedures.
  • Conduct regular audits on the effectiveness of the use of risk assessment tools.
  • Conduct regular rounds for hazard identification and behavioural observation.
  • Actively participate in critical control management activities and safety programs
  • Follow up on implementation of corrective actions and effectiveness of corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with HSE Supt to conduct specific health and safety training.
  • Fire extinguisher, vehicles, rigs inspection
  • Conduct basic trainings to the staff.
  • Competent crane/Forklift operator
  • Competent Rigger


Finance & Commercial:

  • Maintain and/or minimise expenditure
  • Prevent and/or reduce wastage.
  • Control stock in hand.
  • Implement optimisation initiatives.

 

Leadership / management:

  • Manage self.
  • Plan weekly, daily tasks.
  • Ensure equipment/tools are available.
  • Recognise and reward performance of the team.
  • Provide technical specialist input
  • Collaborate with teams and encourage individual contribution.
  • Investigate and resolve problems by finding solutions.
  • Work constructively with all teams.
  • Encourage input of team members.
  • Develops trainee and/or backup support within team for roster breaks.
  • Be responsive to work and personal issues of team members.


Compliance and Business Improvement:

  • Identify and prioritize all risks and liabilities and ensure these risks and liabilities addressed.
  • Participate in risk assessments.

3.   Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Education:

  • Advanced degree, health/safety/Environment or ERT or equivalent

 

Relevant experience:

  • 2 - 3 years’ experience In HSE or ERT
  • Knowledge of legal requirements, HSE systems and processes.
  • Emergency response processes
  • Awareness of mine processes
  • Substantial knowledge in health and safety or training in the mining sector

 

Skills

  • Ability to analyse and solve problems.
  • Ability to communicate and transfer knowledge to direct reports and other site personnel.
  • Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel.
  • Written and spoken English and French
  • Competent Crane operator /Competent Rigger
  • Driving License
