The University of Notre Dame invites applications and nominations for a distinguished scholar and visionary leader to serve as the Roth Gibson Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Hessert Aerospace Laboratories. This senior, faculty leadership role is intended for an internationally recognized aerospace researcher who will provide strategic direction and intellectual leadership to advance the laboratories as a world class hub for aerospace research, education, and collaboration.

The Director will integrate and elevate the laboratory’s exceptional experimental, computational, and theoretical capabilities to address critical and emerging challenges in aerospace engineering. The successful candidate will cultivate a dynamic, interdisciplinary research environment that supports faculty, postdoctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, and visiting scholars, while enhancing the global impact and reputation of Notre Dame’s aerospace enterprise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and long-term strategic direction for the Hessert Aerospace Laboratories.
    • Develop a strategic plan for the development and utilization of the facilities and space that supports the faculty needs
  • Build and sustain a premier research organization that integrates experimental, computational, and theoretical approaches.
  • Enhance national and international visibility through high-impact research products, initiatives, partnerships, and scholarly leadership.
  • Foster interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty, students, postdoctoral scholars, and external partners.
  • Lead efforts to secure major external funding from federal agencies, industry, and foundations.
  • Ensure the safe, effective, and innovative operation of facilities while guiding future infrastructure investments.
  • Manage the staff resources to effectively support ongoing and developing research programs in an equitable and transparent manner.
  • Champion educational and research training opportunities from undergraduate through postdoctoral levels.
  • Mentor graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, junior faculty, and emerging leaders in aerospace engineering.
  • Represent the Hessert Aerospace Laboratories within the university and to external stakeholders.
  • Earned doctorate in aerospace engineering or a closely related field.
  • Internationally recognized record of scholarly achievement and sustained research excellence.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in academic research environments, centers, or laboratories.
  • Strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education and mentorship.
  • Eligibility for appointment at the senior (tenured) faculty rank.
  • Experience leading large-scale, multidisciplinary research programs.
  • Ability to secure major external research funding.
  • Experience managing complex research facilities or shared infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering collaborative, inclusive, and high-impact research environments.

This is an endowed, senior level faculty appointment, with compensation and start up package commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position carries substantial leadership responsibility, strategic influence, and institutional support.
