We are hiring a  Research Engineering Manager to lead frontier research projects within the Responsibility portfolio at Google DeepMind. The success of these projects is crucial for fulfilling Google DeepMind's mission to build AI responsibly to benefit humanity. The position involves leading teams, defining technical direction, and ensuring high-impact delivery across multiple projects that advance responsible AI development.

The Role

We’re looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead and contribute to key research projects within our Responsibility portfolio. You will be responsible for setting the technical vision, steering execution, and ensuring the delivery of scalable ML systems that advance frontier AI safety. You must possess the strategic foresight to align technical roadmaps with Google DeepMind's broader goals and the communication skills to navigate complex stakeholder landscapes, from Research Scientists to executive leadership. You will manage a team of Research Engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.

Key responsibilities: 

• Lead, mentor, and grow a team of Research Engineers.
• Partner with executive leadership to define the research strategy for advancing the frontier of AI responsibility and safety.
• Communicate the research strategy across executive leadership within GDM and our Google Partners, building collaborations across PAs and functional units.
• Define and communicate a strategic vision for aligning frontier research with Google's product roadmap.
• Oversee the design, development, and implementation of robust and scalable ML systems and tools.
• Communicate complex technical concepts, project statuses, risks, and opportunities clearly and concisely to various stakeholders, including researchers, engineers, and executive leadership.
• Keep up with the latest advancements in AI, machine learning, LLMs, and AI ethics and safety.

About You

In order to set you up for success as a Research Engineering Manager at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:  

• 7+ years of experience in a technical leadership role, with at least 3 years of experience managing engineering or research teams.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Machine Learning, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Proven track record of leading and delivering complex, large-scale machine learning projects.
• Deep understanding and hands-on experience with state-of-the-art Machine Learning techniques, particularly in Deep Learning and Large Language Models (LLMs).
• Fluency and experience with common ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, JAX) necessary to guide Senior Research Engineers in scaling for LLMs and deep learning.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, including executive leadership.
• Demonstrated ability to work flexibly across multiple projects and successfully adapt to evolving priorities in a fast-paced research driven environment.

In addition, some of the following would be an advantage:

• Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.
• Experience working in AI ethics, safety, or responsibility research.
• Experience with large-scale data processing and distributed systems.
• Publications or contributions to the machine learning research community.
• Familiarity with the sociotechnical aspects of AI systems.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $248,000 - $349,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
