We’re searching for a Quality Engineer II. The primary objective of this role is to ensure quality in manufacturing and supply chain in support of the development and production of the Aurora Driver and delivering the benefits of self-driving technology safely, quickly, and broadly. A successful candidate is data-driven, excels at complex problem solving, has a strong quality and product focused mindset, and can lead cross-functional teams to identify and eliminate quality problems, issues and risks.

In this role, you will

  • Lead the supplier partner and/or CM industrialization process from design through production ramp-up.
  • Lead the APQP process and manage PPAP through the start of production with supplier partners and/or CM as well as Aurora’s OEM customers.
  • Lead the development of pFMEA, Control Plan, capability analysis, MSAs, DOEs, etc. in alignment with automotive APQP and PPAP requirements and activities.
  • Support the development of dFMEAs, PFD, and Work Instructions at supplier partner and/or CM by closely working with Aurora design and NPI teams. 
  • Support supplier partner and/or CM with tooling, equipment, and process qualifications by closely working with Aurora design and NPI teams.
  • Assess supplier partner and/or CM readiness for each build phase and help manage production risks.
  • Lead root cause and corrective action efforts for any supplier partner and/or CM related quality issues from production or field returns.
  • Monitor and report supplier partner and/or CM quality metrics both internally and externally to Aurora’s OEM customers to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Uses lean tools, statistical techniques and analytical methods to achieve effective problem solving, root cause discovery and corrective action (8D Problem Solving, 5-Why) both internally and externally.
  • Closely collaborate with other cross-functional teams throughout the industrialization phases to ensure products meet industry and Aurora’s quality standard.
  • Train suppliers on Aurora quality system, process, and review part quality documentations (e.g. PSW elements)
  • Support the development and continuous improvement of Aurora quality management systems with a focus on APQP and supplier partner/CM management.
  • Travel domestically and internationally ~25%  to supplier partner and/or CM sites to facilitate audits, industrialization activities and issue resolutions.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial Engineering, or related fields; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years in quality, supplier quality, or manufacturing - ideally in automotive, aerospace, robotics, or medical devices.
  • Hands-on experience launching new products and improving quality systems.
  • Strong experience with supplier audits, APQP, PPAP, and production ramp-ups. 
  • Excellent analytical abilities, technical writing ability and comprehensive understanding of the quality toolbox (SPC, 8D root cause analysis, tolerancing, control and inspection standards, etc.).
  • Familiar with key quality tools: FMEAs, control plans, SPC, MSA, and capability studies.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes for PCBA, electromechanical assemblies, injection molding, casting, and stamping.
  • Capable of interpreting engineering drawings and using GD&T
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001, IATF 16949 quality systems
  • Experience with Google Sheets, Docs, Slides and Gmail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication of status and results, including generating formal reports or presentations for customers.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.

Desirable Qualifications 

  • Certifications like CQE, Six Sigma Green Belt, or Quality Auditor
  • Experienced in ISO 26262.
  • Proficient in Minitab or other statistical software capabilities.
  • Experience with Jira.

The base salary range for this position is $112,000-$180,000 per year. Aurora’s pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate’s starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future. The successful candidate will also be eligible for an annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits.
