Quality Engineer

TLDR

This role is centered on quality strategy and hands-on testing for high-visibility, data-driven features in the FanDuel Sportsbook.

THE POSITION
Our roster has an opening with your name on it

FanDuel is evolving how quality is owned across its engineering organization. We are looking for a Quality Engineer who operates as a quality strategist embedded in the team from day one. This is a hands-on role that blends strategic quality ownership with practical test script writing, manual and exploratory testing, and automation contribution. You will help shape how quality is defined, enable engineers to co-own test coverage, and work alongside a Senior Quality Engineer to advance automation strategy across the Transform Betting Merchandising pillar.

This role is embedded in a team building high-visibility, data-driven features for the FanDuel Sportsbook, including real-time player stat surfaces that inform live betting. The architecture is distributed, the data pipelines are live, and the stakes are real.

The QE at FanDuel is not the final gate. You are an enabler of speed, trust, and confidence, integrated into how the engineering team works from day one of a feature.

THE GAME PLAN
Everyone on our team has a part to play

  • Join sprint planning and design discussions early to define testability criteria, surface risks, and shape acceptance criteria before development begins.
  • Own test strategy for projects on the team, covering manual, exploratory, and automated layers, and establish quality gates that provide consistent feedback throughout the SDLC.
  • Enable engineers to self-serve on quality through shared test cases and shift-left practices that make quality a team-wide responsibility.
  • Partner with the team's Senior Quality Engineer to write tests, identify automation candidates, and help advance automation strategy.
  • Validate data integrity across API layers and live pipelines, including real-time stat feeds, caching behavior, null and edge states, and downstream display consistency.
  • Conduct manual and exploratory testing where automation coverage is not yet in place. This is a real and valued part of the role today.
  • Use monitoring tools (Datadog or similar), read logs, and produce high-quality bug reports that pinpoint root cause and narrow blast radius across contract, functional, and performance layers.
  • Apply AI tools actively for test generation, exploratory planning, and query generation, with critical judgment about AI output and awareness of risks in AI-generated code.
  • Surface defect trends and quality metrics to the team and leadership in a way that connects testing outcomes to business value.

THE STATS
What we're looking for in our next teammate

  • Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript with enough depth to read, write, and debug test code across frontend and API layers.
  • Working knowledge of React or React Native sufficient to understand component behavior and how UI tests should be structured.
  • Solid experience across testing techniques: exploratory, edge case, black box, white box, and risk-based prioritization.
  • Active use of AI coding and testing tools (Cursor, Copilot, Claude, or similar) with critical judgment about output and awareness of risks specific to AI-generated code.
  • Strong API testing fluency including schema validation, auth flow testing, and connecting API failures to UI symptoms.
  • Experience validating data-heavy features, including how data moves from source to display and where pipeline failures introduce risk.
  • Mobile testing experience on real devices across iOS and Android, with clear distinction between native and responsive web testing.
  • Hands-on experience writing automated tests using one or more of: Playwright, Cypress, Detox, Appium.
  • Comfortable contributing to automation alongside a dedicated automation engineer, with a growth mindset toward broader ownership over time.
  • Track record of sharing test strategy with engineers before development begins so quality is distributed, not bottlenecked.
  • Experience using quality metrics to communicate strategy and progress to stakeholders, connecting technical signals to business outcomes.
  • Strong communicator across technical and non-technical audiences with release judgment grounded in real-world risk reasoning, not a binary pass/fail stance.
  • Comfort in a modern engineering environment including Git, CI/CD pipelines (Buildkite, GitHub Actions), and distributed service architectures.
