Own end-to-end quality assurance for Proton's privacy-first products and advocate user experience while collaborating with multiple teams to ensure high-quality software.
About Proton
Join Proton and build a better internet where privacy is the default
Proton was founded in 2014 by scientists from CERN on a simple truth: privacy is a fundamental human right. Since then, we’ve built the world’s largest encrypted email service (Proton Mail) and expanded into Proton VPN, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, and Proton Calendar—tools used by millions globally to protect their freedom, fight censorship, and keep their data safe. In some situations, Proton has literally helped save lives!
We are profitable, independent (no VC control), and selectively hire from the top ~1% of applicants. Our 500+ team members across 50+ countries come from leading organizations and elite academic backgrounds. We move fast, keep hierarchy light, and prioritize impact over optics. If you want to do meaningful work with exceptionally high-caliber people, this is it. Join us and do work you can truly be proud of. Check our open-source projects here!
The team:
We're a passionate, quality-obsessed team that believes great software starts with great testing. We work across Proton's suite of privacy-first products — all open source — and we take pride in being the last line of defence before our tools reach millions of users worldwide. We're not just bug hunters; we're advocates for the user experience, embedded in every stage of the development cycle. If you love breaking things to make them better, thrive in a collaborative environment, and care deeply about the software you ship — you'll feel right at home here.
What you will do:
Own end-to-end quality assurance across one or more Proton products, from feature inception to release
Design and execute thorough test plans covering functional, regression, exploratory, and edge-case scenarios
Be the voice of the user — identify usability issues, inconsistencies, and privacy risks before they ever reach production
Work closely with developers, product managers, and designers to catch issues early and shift quality left
Document bugs with clarity and precision, and follow them through to resolution with the engineering team
Contribute to and maintain automated test suites, helping to reduce manual effort over time
Perform risk-based testing with a sharp focus on privacy, data integrity, and security behaviour
Help define and improve QA processes, standards, and best practices across the team
Participate in release readiness reviews and provide clear go/no-go recommendations
Stay curious — keep up with new testing techniques, tools, and industry trends to continuously raise the bar
What we are looking for:
3–5 years of hands-on QA experience, ideally on consumer-facing software products with a large and diverse user base
Strong command of manual testing techniques — you know how to write a test plan, execute it rigorously, and report findings clearly
Experience with both functional and non-functional testing, including performance, security, and privacy considerations
Familiarity with test automation concepts and at least basic scripting ability (Python, Bash, or similar) — you don't need to be a developer, but you should speak their language
Good understanding of CI/CD pipelines and how QA fits into a modern, fast-moving development workflow
Comfortable using bug tracking and test management tools such as Jira, Testmo, or similar
Experience with version control using Git and a natural fit in an open-source collaborative environment
A genuine sensitivity to privacy and security issues — understanding of privacy-by-design principles is a real plus
Sharp eye for detail combined with a structured, methodical approach — nothing slips past you
Great communicator who can work effectively across disciplines in a remote-friendly, internationally distributed team
A real passion for quality, open-source software, and building technology that genuinely protects people
