Position Summary: The Product Designer focuses on designing intuitive, inclusive, and empowering communication tools for individuals with complex communication needs. This role collaborates with cross-functional teams – including Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) users, speech-language pathologists, and accessibility experts – to create mobile apps that foster independence, dignity, and expressive power.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Designs user-centered interfaces for mobile AAC apps across iOS and Android platforms, ensuring accessibility and ease of use for diverse user populations including pediatric and adult users.
- Collaborates with AAC users, caregivers, clinicians, and internal teams to understand communication needs and translates them into functional design solutions.
- Creates wireframes, protypes, and high-fidelity mockups using tools like Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD.
- Ensures compliance with accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG, Apple Accessibility, Android Accessibility) and supports alternative access methods such as head tracking, switch scanning, and eye gaze.
- Conducts usability testing with AAC users and other stakeholders and iterates designs based on feedback.
- Works closely with developers to ensure accurate implementation of design features and maintains consistency across app ecosystems.
- Translates complex requirements into intuitive and visually appealing interfaces.
- Stays current with design trends, tools, and technologies, and contributes to team knowledge sharing.
- Develops a UI/UX style guide for mobile applications.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Strong portfolio demonstrating inclusive design for mobile platforms.
- Proficiency in design tools such as Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD.
- Solid understanding of user-centered design, interaction design, and information architecture.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in design, HCI, Engineering, or Specialist Education.
- At least 3 years of experience in product design (UX/UI) required, preferably in mobile applications or assistive technology environments.
- 2 years of experience collaborating with cross functional teams is required.
- At least 2 years of experience with accessibility standards and inclusive design is required.
- At least 3 years of experience in digital graphic design with an emphasis on visually appealing, user-friendly UI is required.
- Knowledge of multilingual design and localization workflows is required.
- Familiarity with front-end development workflows is required.
- At least 3 years of experience in agile development environments is required.
- Experience working with AAC users, communication partners, and AAC professionals preferred.
- Experience working with pediatric users preferred.
- Experience designing for neurodiverse populations is preferred.
