About the role 

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Process Safety professional to join our Manufacturing team at the Lytton Refinery. In this critical leadership role, you will be responsible for managing process safety risks and driving strong process safety performance across the site. 

 

Leading the Process Safety Team you will have accountability for key process safety systems, including Management of Change, Risk Management, and Process Hazard Analysis, as well as maintaining the site’s Major Hazard Facility (MHF) licence and leading updates to the MHF Safety Case. 

 

You will provide direction and guidance to Operations and Projects, ensuring effective implementation of process safety and risk management systems. The role has a strong focus on regulatory compliance, governance, reporting, and ownership of applicable OEMS elements, with accountability for driving continuous improvement in process safety performance at the refinery. 

 

You will also act as the primary relationship manager with the Queensland Government MHF regulator, representing the site and ensuring constructive, compliant, and transparent engagement. 

 

This role offers the opportunity to have a significant impact on site process safety performance while working closely with senior operational, maintenance and engineering stakeholders in a complex, major-hazard environment. 

 

Key responsibilities 

  • Lead the Process Safety team, including work planning, budgeting, capability uplift and professional development, while actively contributing to the broader Refinery leadership community. 
  • Proactively engage with site and front-line teams to provide coaching, guidance and training that strengthens process safety and risk awareness. 
  • Own and manage Process Safety risk assessment processes and core process safety management systems, ensuring effectiveness and continuous improvement. 
  • Act as the Subject Matter Expert for Refinery Management of Change (RMOC), with accountability for ensuring robust and effective change management across Lytton. 
  •  Maintain stewardship of the Lytton Major Hazard Facility (MHF) Safety Case, including ongoing development, regulatory alignment, incident reporting and investigation oversight. 
  • Provide expert recommendations and solutions by evaluating complex risks, systems and data, driving improvements to policies, standards, DMS quality, and operational practices. 

 

Qualifications & Experience

You collaborate naturally and effectively with other teams, openly sharing information, stepping in where needed, and holding yourself and others accountable to deliver strong results. 

 

  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering or Chemistry discipline  
  • Chartered – Registered Professional Engineer QLD (RPEQ) is essential 
  • Proven extensive experience in process safety related roles in Oil Refining or other hazardous process industries   
  • Extensive people and project leadership experience  
  • Knowledge of risk management, change management and operational readiness 
  • Trained HAZOP leader 
  • Strong influencing and negotiable skills  
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) 
  • Strong stakeholder management and engagement both external and internal
