Principal Scientist Bioinformatics

AI overview

Drive impactful biomarker and multi-omics analyses in clinical programs, collaborating across teams to inform strategy and contribute to therapeutic development.

SUMMARY:

We are seeking a highly capable bioinformatics expert to join our Translational Medicine team as a Principal Scientist, Bioinformatics. This individual will serve as a senior technical leader within the Bioinformatics function, driving high-impact biomarker and multi-omics analyses across Gossamer’s clinical programs in pulmonary disease.  The role involves developing and executing advanced analytical workflows, contributing to biomarker hypothesis generation, and supporting cross-functional program teams from late-stage discovery through clinical development.

The successful candidate will step into active therapeutic programs and operate with a high degree of independence, contributing meaningfully to program-level strategy and execution. This role requires close collaboration with Translational Research and Medicine, Clinical Development, Biostatistics, Medical Affairs and Regulatory Affairs, as well as engagement with external partners, thought leaders and CROs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead computational biology and bioinformatics efforts within active therapeutic programs.
  • Partner closely with Translational Research, Clinical Development and Biometrics to shape biomarker strategies and analysis plans.
  • Perform study-level analyses of exploratory clinical biomarker data (including proteomics, transcriptomics, imaging) to assess mechanism of action, identify molecular drivers of remission and characterize therapeutic response.
  • Conduct analyses to support preclinical translational research and exploratory biology studies to inform clinical development programs and business development objectives, including mechanism validation, target assessment, and responder biology.
  • Develop and apply ML/AI models to characterize patient trajectories and identify responder subgroups
  • Generate high-quality data visualizations, summaries, and analyses to support manuscripts, abstracts, regulatory submissions and internal communication and decision-making.
  • Communicate findings clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, contributing to program strategy and direction.
  • Serve as a computational thought partner to scientific leadership across programs.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Systems Biology, Biostatistics or related field.
  • 5-10+ years of relevant experience in biotech or pharmaceutical industry roles, ideally supporting therapeutic development programs.
  • Strong understanding of biology and translational research, with demonstrated ability to address biological questions using computational approaches.
  • Demonstrated experience in analysis and biological interpretation of multi-omics datasets, including RNAseq, proteomics, single-cell, spatial, imaging, etc
  • Strong proficiency in statistical modeling, machine learning and integrative data analysis
  • Excellent programming skills in R and/or Python; experience with cloud computing environments
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities across programs, and influence program strategy through data-driven insights.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience working in matrixed, cross-functional teams.

Preferred:

  • Experience in pulmonary disease, fibrosis, inflammation, immunology and/or cardiovascular biology.
  • Demonstrated track record of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
  • Formal training or strong background in statistics
