Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies, Workers Compensation Division, is searching for a Principal Data Architect to design and evolve the enterprise data architecture that supports our growing business, AI adoption, and long-term strategy. This individual ensures our data ecosystem is secure, scalable, reliable, and well-governed, working hand-in-hand with the Director of Data Strategy, IT engineering teams, as well as Analytics, Claims, and Actuarial teams to build a unified, modern, and trustworthy data environment.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
ARCHITECTURE LEADERSHIP
Develop and evolve the enterprise data architecture blueprint including cloud, on premises, and hybrid environments ensuring alignment with business and analytical/AI needs.
Set the direction for modern data integration, event driven design, master data management, and responsible AI enablement.
Evaluate current systems and design a practical modernization path that reduces technical debt and improves data quality and performance.
DATA PLATFORM AND ENGINEERING DESIGN
Lead the architectural design for enterprise data platforms, including structured and unstructured data environments.
Design standards for ingesting data from core policy, claims, CRM, billing, underwriting, and workflow systems.
Establish scalable patterns for operational data feeds, partner data exchanges, real time integration, and analytical data pipelines.
Define the strategy and technical patterns for how the company manages data copies, extracts, and transformations in a secure and governed manner.
COLLABORATION AND LEADERSHIP
Partner closely with the Director of Data Strategy to make sure architecture aligns with business priorities.
Work with engineering, application teams, analytics, and actuarial groups to ensure efficient, well designed data flows.
Provide technical leadership for system modernization efforts and guide how data is structured, integrated and maintained across the enterprise.
DATA QUALITY AND GOVERNANCE
Define architectural standards that support enterprise data quality, lineage, metadata, and stewardship expectations.
Establish reliable integration patterns for the company’s core systems.
Ensure the architecture meets audit, compliance, and security requirements.
TECHNICAL EXECUTION
Lead complex architecture reviews, solution designs, and technical roadmaps.
Oversee proof of concepts, technical assessments, and platform evaluations.
Bring structure and clarity to a mixed technology environment with legacy systems and modern cloud services.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or related field, required. Master's degree preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS: One or more preferred: Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP), AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Data Analytics certifications, Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate
EXPERIENCE
A minimum of 12 years of experience in data architecture, data engineering, or system integration required.
Strong experience with large-scale operational systems, transactional databases, and customer-facing platforms.
Deep experience with enterprise data feeds, real time integration patterns, analytical data pipelines, and AI enabling architectures.
Experience designing data models, integration patterns, master data structures, and governed data ecosystems.
Strong understanding of insurance data, regulatory requirements, and complex transactional systems.
Proven ability to influence executives, lead cross-functional teams, and communicate complex technical concepts clearly.
