The Opportunity
 
Adept Group is seeking a Packaging Engineer (1099 Contractor)! This candidate would have 3+ years of experience in packaging spec management, data validation, or SAP spec/BOM entry. They would have hands-on experience with SAP and strong Excel skills and comfort with bulk data processing (VLOOKUP, pivot tables, etc.).
 
This candidate would be located in the USA and be comfortable working in CST or MST.
 
This is a 1099 Contractor (Independent Contractor) opportunity for 40-hours per week for 6 months.
 
Key Responsibilities: 
  • Review and validate 3,500+ packaging specifications and BOM records for prepared foods 
  • Cleanse and consolidate packaging and procurement-related data into SAP 
  • Validate and update dielines, pallet patterns, units of measure, consumption quantities, packaging materials, price, supplier info, MOQs, and lead times 
  • Harmonize SAP records to match legacy spec format and standards 
  • Organize and import records pulled from shared drives, Excel trackers, PDFs, supplier systems, and other sources 
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders (sourcing, plant engineers, packaging, IT) to resolve inconsistencies and verify current packaging usage 
  • Prepare documentation to track changes, exceptions, and issues for audit readiness 
  • Support potential BOM creation if time and budget allow 
Typical Day to Day: 
  • Start with prioritized list of high-volume or high-impact SKUs 
  • Review existing spec data from legacy systems and suppliers 
  • Align with internal team on formatting and structure 
  • Work within SAP, Excel, and other software to organize and document packaging specs 
  • Identify and correct duplicates, incomplete entries, and inconsistencies 
  • Conduct supplier outreach to gather missing inputs 
  • Coordinate with base business team (knowledge transfer, consistency) 
  • Regular touchpoints with client-side stakeholders to validate progress 
  • Participate in standing check-in calls with client and Adept PM lead 
Minimum Requirements: 
  • 3+ years of experience in packaging spec management, data validation, or SAP spec/BOM entry 
  • Strong familiarity with SAP, particularly around material specs and BOM integration 
  • Understanding of packaging hierarchy, spec attributes (e.g. materials, dimensions, coatings) 
  • Strong data management and documentation skills 
  • Ability to manage and validate large volumes of data accurately 
  • Strong Excel skills and comfort with bulk data processing (VLOOKUP, pivot tables, etc.) 
  • Experience working with packaging suppliers and manufacturing sites 
  • Ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders 
Nice to Haves: 
  • Experience in CPG, food, or protein categories strongly preferred 
  • Experience with Packfora or spec migration/clean-up tools 
  • Prior work in a centralized spec transformation initiative 
  • Familiarity with packaging sustainability attributes (e.g., weight tracking, mono vs. multi-material) 
  • Exposure to BOM optimization or packaging harmonization projects 
  • Experience using automation tools or AI platforms to accelerate data cleanup
