Ophthalmic Technician
Brief Description;
Responsibilities:
Patient Communication
· Inform patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how he/she will be affected during the tests
· Review proper use of medications with patients
· Answer patient questions about what he/she should anticipate during and after surgery or treatment
· Transfer patients to surgical coordinator to establish surgery date (either physically or via documented surgical request)
· Escort patient to exam room for visit; after visit, escort patient to front desk and provide front desk receptionist with any further instructions
Documentation
· Obtain patient history to include chief compliant with qualifiers, history of present illness, past medical history (ocular and general), family ocular history, history of allergies and medications, and surgical and social history
· Perform accurate and consistent documentation of data collected from testing and any patient encounter
· Formulate and obtain proper informed consents
Clinical Work-Up
· Ability to perform lensometry, visual acuity, manifest refraction for distance and near vision, pupil assessment, color screening, stereo testing, auto refraction, auto keratometry, glare testing, ocular motility screening, confrontational visual field testing, Schirmer testing, Amsler grid, tonometry, anterior segment checks, and dilation of pupils
Diagnostic Testing
· Ability to perform visual field testing, fundus photography, topography, and pachymetry
Contact Lens Fitting
· Performs keratometry and refraction, selection of contact lenses to fit, assessment of fitting, instruction of insertion and removal, discussion of risks and wearing time, and completion of order forms
Advanced Testing:
· Ability to perform GDX, OCT, ASCANS, and any other advanced diagnostic testing added to the practice
Doctor Assistant:
· Assist doctor as needed in direct patient care
· Set up proper instrumentation
· Act as scribe for doctor
· Maintain smooth flow of patients and direct doctor to next patient to be seen
· Assist in preparation of biopsies for the laboratory
Administrative Tasks:
· Stock rooms with diagnostic drops, gloves, swabs, alcohol preparation pads, note pads, contact lens order forms, contact lens solutions, etc.
· Maintain cleanliness of lanes including slit lamps, exam chairs, and counters
· Stock and monitor cold sterilization trays
· Clean diagnostic lenses
· Open and close lanes ensuring all lights are turned off
· Maintain proper inventory of supplies
· Other duties as assigned

Required:
· High school diploma or equivalent
· Two years’ experience as an ophthalmic technician preferred
· JCAHPO certified or working toward certification
· Maintains professional appearance – adheres to dress code and demonstrates good personal hygiene
