The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre has 12 site groups and 26 specialty clinics, and almost 3,000 staff who see over 400,000 patient visits every year. Its 800,000 square feet house 130 inpatient beds, 373,000 square feet of research space and 17 radiation treatment machines, making it one of the largest comprehensive cancer treatment facilities in the world and the largest radiation treatment centre in Canada.

Position Summary

In this role, the Health Clinician Scientist (HCS) will lead the development of a research program focused on co-design, implementation, and evaluation of transformative care models and health innovations that address the complex and evolving fundamental care needs of patients impacted by cancer.

The HCS will be solely responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating a program of clinically-based research. The HCS role integrates clinical and research capabilities and expertise contributing to knowledge discovery, translation and practice improvements that improve patient care outcomes and service delivery. The position will support and promote research initiatives in interdisciplinary research environment. The HSC must be prepared to become a member a UHN Research Institute and work collaboratively with academic partners.

In addition to leading research initiatives, the HSC will play a critical role in bridging clinical practice with scientific inquiry, ensuring that the outcomes of the work have a tangible, real-world impact on patient care. This includes engaging in initiatives that foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation within the clinical and research settings to improve healthcare systems and patient-centered care.

Duties

  • Lead and oversee a research program focused on co-creating, designing, scaling, and sustaining transformative models of fundamental care and health innovations as an independent scientist
  • Ensure the alignment of the research program with the strategic priorities of UHN/Oncology Program & CAP
  • Contribute to the strategic development and initiatives related to the UHN Nursing strategy and the Oncology Nursing Centre of Excellence
  • Actively seek funding opportunities, including peer-reviewed grants from tri-council bodies and philanthropic sources, to support research programs, as well as trainees and learners at various levels (post-doctoral, doctoral, masters, undergraduate, youth) and research staff
  • Build and lead a team, while serving as a mentor, role model, and supervisor to trainees, learners, and research staff across different levels of expertise
  • Demonstrate academic productivity through publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals and presenting research findings at scientific conferences
  • Actively engage in knowledge mobilization to share research progress and its impact with key stakeholders
  • PhD in health services/nursing with post-doctoral fellowship experience preferred
  • Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse (Extended Class) with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Proven experience in co-design, implementation, and evaluation, utilizing mixed methods to develop transformational fundamental care models and complex health innovations throughout the healthcare system, resulting in practical, creative, and impactful solutions.
  • Demonstrated success in securing peer-reviewed funding from various sources (e.g., tri-council and other funding bodies) and contributing to knowledge dissemination through high-quality, peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific conferences.
  • Adept at working in a collaborative team setting within a growing Institute and Centre.
  • Self-motivated, with strong organizational skills and a keen attention to detail; able to manage responsibilities and efficiently execute tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Comfortable with change, demonstrating adaptability and agility as research areas evolve, while collaborating with key decision-makers and partners within complex health systems and associated organizations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and work effectively across different sectors, including hospitals, primary care, and community services, as well as supervising research staff and trainees.
  • Capable of working independently, applying critical thinking, and resolving technical and methodological challenges encountered in the research process.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a high level of professionalism, ethical standards, discretion, and diplomacy.
  • Proficient in a range of software tools, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Familiarity with research software and statistical tools for quantitative analysis, is an asset.
