Narrative Designer

TLDR

Create engaging narratives and dialogues for in-game cutscenes, collaborating closely with designers and artists on emotional storytelling in a small team environment.

This role will be responsible for creating the narrative structure, writing screenplay, dialogues and assisting with implementation of cutscenes / quests inside the game engine (Unity). They will be part of a small design team and work closely with the lead game designer. They will collaborate with VO / mocap artists, level designers and assist with creation of in-game cutscenes that are in line with the vision and emotional experience of the game as defined by our creative director.

Responsibilities: 

  1. Come up with an engaging narrative that evokes the desired emotional response
    1. Maintain pacing of the narrative to keep the player engaged
  2. Create and define characters, their backstory, motivations, etc. for the game
  3. Write screenplay and dialogues for in-game cutscenes, tutorials, NPC conversations
    1. Plan locations, characters, props, etc. that are needed 
    2. Write content and flavor text (for UI), shouts and calls (for NPC) for quests / missions
  4. Work with the concept team to assist creation of storyboards
    1. Dictate camera angles, perspectives, shot composition, etc.
    2. Incorporate feedback from the creative director 
    3. Iterate on storyboards as needed
  5. Collaborate with art (2D, 3D) team to assist with creation of assets for cutscenes / tutorials
    1. Iterate on assets / level with feedback from the design lead and the creative director
  6. Coordinate with VO / mocap artists / animators to create cutscenes
    1. Ensure that the desired emotional response is present in the delivered voice overs
    2. Collaborate with animators to get the right look and feel for the scene
    3. Collaborate with level / game designers to implement the cutscene in the mission / quest
  7. Playtest the quest / mission / tutorial with rest of the team after implementation
    1. Iterate on cutscene / conversation / tutorial as needed with the playtest feedback

Requirements

  1. Experience working as a narrative designer
    1. Released novel or game, published short stories is a plus
    2. Strategy and / or premium games is a plus
  2. Experience creating screenplay and dialogue that evoke specific emotions 
    1. Knowledge of narrative structures, character archetypes, writing styles is a plus
  3. Experience working with in-engine cutscene / quest creation tools
    1. Knowledge of Quests (Game Creator, Unity), Twine is a plus
  4. Experience working on cutscenes
    1. Experience working on plays / short movies is a plus
  5. Great understanding of player psychology
    1. Knowledge of architecture / poetics of space is a plus
    2. Knowledge of player psychology is a plus
  6. Keeps up to date with trends in narrative design for PC games
  7. Fits the culture we are developing @Tentworks IO
    1. Knowledge of a wide variety of narrative design principles is a plus
    2. Playing strategy games actively is a plus
