Microsoft 365 Governance Administrator

TLDR

Shape and operate Microsoft 365 governance across the organization by modernizing collaboration platforms and ensuring compliance and access controls.

Precision for Medicine is a Clinical Research Organization. Precision’s uniquely integrated offering enables the science of precision medicine by combining novel clinical trial designs, industry-leading operational and medical experts, advanced biomarker and data analytics solutions, and an unequivocal real passion for rare diseases and oncology, in addition to working across other therapeutic areas.

As our Microsoft 365 environment continues to grow, we are seeking a Microsoft 365 Governance Administrator to help modernize, govern, and integrate our collaboration platform across SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive, and the Power Platform. This role is ideal for someone who has hands-on experience cleaning up, rationalizing, and integrating large Microsoft 365 tenants and who enjoys bringing order, structure, and sustainability to complex environments.

As a Microsoft 365 Governance Administrator, you will play a critical role in shaping and operating Microsoft 365 governance across the organization. This includes permissions management, lifecycle controls, retention and records management, information protection, tenant integration, and data-driven governance reporting—working closely with Legal, GRC, Security, IT, and M&A stakeholders.

This is a governance-first role with strong execution responsibility, well suited for someone who understands how M365 environments evolve over time—and how to modernize and integrate them without disrupting the business.

Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to:

Microsoft 365 Governance & Modernization

  • Lead governance initiatives across SharePoint Online, Microsoft Teams, OneDrive, and Power Platform.
  • Assess and remediate legacy configurations, over-permissioned content, and stale collaboration resources.
  • Drive tenant modernization aligned to Microsoft best practices and enterprise governance standards.

Permissions & Access Management

  • Design and maintain least-privilege permission models across M365 workloads.
  • Develop automated renewal profiles for user and group membership recertification on a recurring basis to reduce risk and entitlement sprawl.
  • Partner with Security and GRC teams to ensure access controls meet compliance and audit expectations.

Lifecycle, Retention & Records Management

  • Define and operate lifecycle management for M365 resources, including:
    • Archiving inactive Teams, Sites, and Groups
    • Decommissioning unused or abandoned resources
    • Preventing long-term collaboration sprawl
  • Implement and manage retention and records management policies in partnership with Legal and GRC teams.
  • Support classification of content as records where required and ensure defensible disposition.
  • Apply and govern sensitivity labels to protect regulated and high-risk content.

Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) Enablement

  • Support Microsoft 365 migration and integration efforts associated with M&A activity.
  • Assess incoming tenants for governance gaps, security risks, and modernization opportunities.
  • Execute or support migrations of SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams content into the enterprise tenant.
  • Align acquired environments to established governance, lifecycle, retention, and information protection standards.

Automation, Reporting & Operations

  • Automate governance and administration using AvePoint, PowerShell, Power Automate, SharePoint Advanced Management, and Microsoft Graph.
  • Analyze and manipulate large governance and usage data sets to identify trends, risks, and optimization opportunities.
  • Produce operational and compliance-focused reports to support lifecycle decisions and leadership visibility.
  • Act as an escalation point for complex governance and collaboration issues.

Qualifications and Experience Required

Education:

  • Bachelor (4-year) degree, with a technical major, such as engineering or computer science or an equivalent combination of education & experience.
  • Microsoft Certification(s) not required but a plus

Work Experience:

  • Required
    • 5+ years of hands-on Microsoft 365 administration, with deep SharePoint Online experience.
    • Proven experience cleaning up, governing, and modernizing enterprise M365 tenants.
    • Strong background in permissions management, lifecycle governance, retention, and compliance-driven collaboration.
    • Experience partnering with Legal, GRC, and Security teams on retention and data protection initiatives.
    • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including analysis and manipulation of large data sets (e.g., pivot tables, lookups, complex formulas, data normalization).
    • Strong automation capability using PowerShell, Microsoft Graph API, PowerAutomate, and SharePoint Advanced Management to extract, analyze, and report on large-scale M365 governance data (Sites/Teams/Groups/permissions/lifecycle signals).
  • Preferred
    • Experience supporting Microsoft 365 migrations, including tenant consolidation or M&A-driven integrations.
    • Familiarity with Microsoft Purview retention and records management.
    • Experience with AvePoint Cloud Governance (provisioning, renewals, reporting).
    • Experience with ShareGate or similar migration tools.
    • Power BI report creation, including governance dashboards and operational reporting.
    • Exposure to Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Chat, Agents, and Copilot governance considerations.
    • Power Platform governance experience (Power Automate, Power Apps).
    • Experience supporting globally distributed teams.
