Membership Officer
Status: Full-time, Remote (with occasional travel to DC and Ecuador)
Reports to: Vice President of Advancement
Salary Range: $70,000 – $95,000
Position Overview
Galápagos Conservancy seeks a strategic, donor-focused Membership Officer to lead the growth, retention, and stewardship of our membership base. Reporting to the Vice President of Advancement, this role owns the membership revenue line and is accountable for annual membership revenue, retention, and upgrade performance.
The Membership Officer is responsible for developing and executing the annual membership strategy, managing multi-channel acquisition and renewal programs, overseeing member services and operations, and supervising the Philanthropy Operations Officer. This role works closely with the Philanthropy, Communications, and Operations teams, as well as external vendors and consultants, to deliver a best-in-class member experience and drive sustainable annual revenue.
Key Responsibilities
1. Membership Growth & Acquisition
- Develop and implement annual strategies to grow membership and membership revenue, with a target of at least 5 percent net growth per year.
- In collaboration with philanthropy and communications staff, plan and execute multi-channel acquisition campaigns including email, direct mail, digital, paid media, web, exhibits, and onsite or event-based opportunities.
- Use segmentation, testing, and data insights to improve response rates, conversion, and cost effectiveness.
- Recommend and iterate membership benefits, offers, and giving tiers to strengthen acquisition and entry-level donor value.
2. Member Stewardship, Retention & Services
- Oversee renewal cycles across mail, digital, and phone channels to achieve strong retention and renewal revenue targets.
- In collaboration with the Marketing and Direct Response Officer, develop and manage automated workflows including welcome series, renewal reminders, and lapsed member re-engagement.
- Ensure timely, accurate, and personalized acknowledgements and confirmations for all members.
- Oversee phone and email communication channels for member inquiries, requests, and problem resolution, ensuring a responsive, donor-centered experience.
- Partner with Philanthropy and Communications on content and storytelling that deepens member connection to Galápagos Conservancy’s mission and impact.
3. Upgrade & Lifetime Value Growth
- Create targeted strategies to encourage members to increase their giving and move into higher membership levels.
- Identify members with major gift potential and collaborate with the Major Gifts Officer to ensure thoughtful, warm transitions.
- Monitor donor behavior and engagement patterns and recommend new strategies to improve long-term donor value and loyalty.
- 4. Data Strategy, CRM & Revenue Accountability
- Serve as the primary lead for membership data strategy, reporting, and performance tracking within EveryAction.
- Ensure accurate records, segmentation, and data hygiene in partnership with the Philanthropy Operations Officer.
- Analyze and report on key performance metrics including acquisition, retention, upgrades, revenue, and return on investment.
- Produce regular dashboards and insights for internal leadership and advancement planning.
- Use data to inform forecasting, goal-setting, and continuous improvement of membership programs.
5. Team Leadership, Vendors & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Supervise and support the Philanthropy Operations Officer, ensuring strong execution of gift processing, data integrity, acknowledgements, and operational workflows.
- Manage relationships with vendors and consultants related to the membership experience, including direct mail, digital fundraising platforms, payment processing, and data services.
- Partner with Communications to align messaging, branding, collateral, and campaign calendars.
- Work with Operations to ensure integrated systems, fulfillment, and donor experience workflows.
- Coordinate with the Major Gifts Officer and executive leadership to ensure donor journeys are seamless, strategic, and non-duplicative.
- Support small cultivation events, briefings, or virtual experiences for members as needed.
6. Administration, Budget & Planning
- Manage the membership budget, vendor contracts, and associated expenses.
- Provide annual membership forecasts, trends, and insights to support organizational planning.
- Perform other related duties in support of Advancement and organizational goals.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience in membership, annual giving, direct response, or donor relations.
- Strong relationship-building, communication, and customer service skills.
- Experience with fundraising CRMs (EveryAction preferred).
- Strong analytical skills; ability to interpret data and use insights to drive decision-making.
- Highly organized; able to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.
- Spanish fluency strongly preferred.
Benefits
The anticipated salary range for this position is $70,000 to $95,000, commensurate with experience, seniority, and scope of responsibility.
