Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM) is the state’s leading provider of sexual and reproductive health care, nationally recognized for education and research. Position Summary:
This role performs high-, moderate-, and waived‑complexity laboratory testing while maintaining strict compliance with state and federal safety regulations. It requires strong technical skill, independent work, accurate documentation, and the ability to troubleshoot instruments and procedures. The position also includes patient‑facing duties such as phlebotomy and guiding patients through self‑collection for STI testing.
Your Day to Day:
High Complexity Laboratory - Panther
o Assess patient specimen acceptability for testing
o Perform FDA approved testing on patient specimens
o Perform and document preventative maintenance
o Review quality control and patient results independently and according to standard operating procedures
o Maintain and store laboratory inventory
o Utilize resources in a responsible, efficient, and cost-effective manner
o Minimize waste
o Organize and file laboratory relevant documents
Health center point of care laboratory
o Phlebotomy for Quest orders
o Instruct patients to self-collect swabs and urine for Panther
o Input orders in EMR
At Home STI Testing
o Process laboratory orders for mailing collection kits to patients
o Maintain accurate records for specimens returned
Adhere to infection control protocols and maintain a clean environment in the lab
Adherent to quality control policies, protocols and procedures
Troubleshoot and report problems as needed
Perform or delegate performance of proficiency testing
Review and is familiar with all procedures in the laboratory manual
Maintain laboratory logs
Maintain medical laboratory equipment by assuring all required equipment function checks, maintenance, cleaning and decontamination procedures and all other necessary quality assurance checks are performed and documented as needed
Demonstrate flexibility and teamwork; understand the interaction between this position and others with whom the position works directly and indirectly
Other tasks and responsibilities as needed
Qualifications
0 – 2 years’ experience
BA/BS required in medical technology or physical science
MT ASCP preferred but not required
Phlebotomy experience a plus
Experience in Microbiology preferred but not required
Must have experience with aseptic technique
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word and Excel preferred), and Laboratory information software
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
Demonstrated skills prioritizing and organizing workload
Superb attention to detail; ability to follow processes and procedures from beginning to end within established timeline
Ability to handle discreet, confidential information
Excellent customer service skills; ability to provide quality services to meet the individual needs of customers
Must be able to work with bleach
