Responsibilities:

  • Lead the diagnosis and resolution of mechanical plant and process issues, coordinating labour, materials and resources to deliver safe and effective maintenance, repair, installation and commissioning activities.
  • Plan, manage and deliver preventative and corrective maintenance in line with statutory legislation, manufacturer guidelines and the PPM system, ensuring all inspections, testing and records are compliant and up to date.
  • Prepare, review and enforce RAMS, permits and safe systems of work, actively promoting a zero-accident culture and ensuring full compliance with safety, quality and environmental standards.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership and out-of-hours support when required, ensuring the safe, reliable and efficient operation of mechanical plant.
  • Lead, supervise and coordinate mechanical teams, apprentices and specialist mechanical/civil contractors, including workshop and warehouse oversight, ensuring high standards of safety, quality and performance.
  • Support OPEX and CAPEX works, asset management and continuous improvement initiatives, working closely with engineering, projects, EC&I and operations teams to improve asset health and maintenance effectiveness.
  • Act as deputy to the Mechanical Engineering Manager, managing documentation, KPIs, shift cover, contractor control and departmental performance to maintain operational resilience.

Requirements

  • Flexibility to work outside normal hours, including call-outs, overtime and shift cover, to support a 24/7 operational environment and lead response to mechanical plant failures.
  • Ability to work safely at heights and supervise high-risk mechanical activities, ensuring compliance with permits, RAMS and safe systems of work.
  • Time-served Mechanical Engineer with a completed apprenticeship and NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds or equivalent qualification; health & safety certifications desirable.
  • Strong hands-on mechanical experience within a power generation or process plant environment, including boilers, turbines, pumps, conveyors, cranes, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, compressors, fans, abatement and fire protection systems.
  • Proven supervisory experience leading skilled mechanical teams and contractors, with the ability to plan, organise and deliver maintenance, outages and inspections safely and efficiently.
  • Competence in a broad range of mechanical maintenance activities (e.g. machining, welding/fabrication, fitting, alignment, lifting operations and use of specialist equipment), with a focus on cost-effective and reliable repairs.
  • Confident people leader with excellent communication and problem-solving skills, able to drive standards, promote a strong safety culture, manage documentation and operate credibly with senior management and cross-functional teams.
