Mechanical Engineer, Packaging Systems

AI overview

Design, prototype, and validate innovative packaging solutions for humanoid robots, ensuring optimal performance and sustainability across diverse materials and testing processes.

Figure is an AI robotics company developing autonomous general-purpose humanoid robots. The goal of the company is to ship humanoid robots with human level intelligence. Its robots are engineered to perform a variety of tasks in the home and commercial markets. Figure is headquartered in San Jose, CA.

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer focused on Packaging Systems to design, prototype, and validate all physical packaging that interacts with our robot and its ecosystem.

Responsibilities:

  • Design packaging systems and shipping enclosures for the humanoid robot, accessories, batteries, and tooling using 3D CAD
  • Translate industrial design goals into functional packaging structures that achieve premium aesthetic quality while meeting drop, vibration, compression, and environmental requirements.
  • Architect multi-material packaging solutions (paperboard, corrugate, molded fiber, foams, plastics, textiles) optimized for strength, sustainability, and manufacturability.
  • Build and iterate physical prototypes to evaluate assembly flow, part fit, ergonomics, and retail unboxing experience.
  • Work with a manufacturer to execute packaging tests: drop testing, cyclic loading, clamp testing, shipping simulation, and climate/aging testing.
  • Develop fixtures and test jigs for structural performance characterization.
  • Generate accurate 2D drawings (GD&T where appropriate) per ASME Y14.5 and packaging annotation standards.
  • Create CMF packs, BOMs, dielines, assembly instructions, pack-out sequences, and packaging specification documentation
  • Partner with Industrial Design to execute visual and tactile brand intent.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, reliability, and logistics teams to ensure packaging meets global shipping, handling, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support first builds at suppliers and on internal lines; own packaging FAIs and continuous improvement.

Requirements:

  • 7+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, packaging engineering, or product design engineering.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Mechanical Engineering, Packaging Science, Industrial Design Engineering, or similar.
  • Expert-level proficiency in 3D CAD (complex part modeling + assemblies).
  • Familiarity with simulation tools (FEA, drop simulation, etc.) and packaging-specific analysis workflows.
  • Comfortable working hands-on: building mockups, cutting prototypes, performing mechanical tests.

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Experience with high-volume packaging manufacturing: molded fiber, injection molding, thermoforming, corrugated converting, die-cutting, foam fabrication.
  • Experience with premium consumer electronics packaging or complex electromechanical products.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers (CMs) and packaging vendors in Asia.
  • CATIA V6 experience.
  • Knowledge of sustainability practices (fiber optimization, recyclability, material LCA).
  • Motion/ergonomics experience related to lifting, handling, and pack-out design.
