Join a multidisciplinary team to design complex power and thermal systems using advanced engineering practices and 3D CAD tools.
A well-established engineering organization is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join its multidisciplinary team. The company focuses on the development and integration of advanced hardware and thermal-power systems across highly regulated industries.
Position Overview
The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for detailed mechanical design, packaging, and integration of complex power and thermal systems. The role involves creating 3D CAD models and production drawings, supporting hardware integration, and collaborating across disciplines including thermal, controls, and systems engineering.
Key Responsibilities
Perform clean sheet mechanical design of power system hardware, including:
Structural components and system packaging
Piping, manifolds, and process flow layouts
Pressure vessels, recuperators, and heat exchangers
Develop and maintain high-quality 3D CAD models and production drawings, applying GD&T according to aerospace or industry standards
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for integration with thermal systems, controls, and instrumentation
Design rotating equipment and power-generation components, including pumps, turbines, compressors, and auxiliary drives
Assist with vendor technical coordination, including specification preparation, component selection, and review of vendor drawings
Apply additive manufacturing techniques where applicable, particularly for complex geometries and thermal-structural components
Support material selection considering strength, fatigue, creep, corrosion, and manufacturability
Perform basic to intermediate stress and thermal-mechanical analyses to support design decisions
Support hardware build, testing, and iterative design improvements
Develop specifications and standard work requirements aligned with system objectives
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
5+ years of mechanical design experience in aerospace, defense, energy, or similarly regulated industries
Proficiency in 3D CAD tools (NX, Creo, CATIA, SolidWorks)
Strong knowledge of GD&T and industry drawing standards
Experience with:
Rotating machinery and power systems
Pressure vessels, boilers, and heat exchangers
Piping systems, P&IDs, and process flow diagrams
Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in aerospace, advanced energy, or power systems
Knowledge of metal additive manufacturing and design-for-AM principles
Familiarity with ASME BPVC, aerospace structural standards, or high-reliability design practices
Experience designing for extreme operating environments (high temperature, vacuum, radiation, or long-life systems)
