About the Role
The Athletic seeks an experienced editor to run its new rapid-response investigative unit. This individual should have experience managing people, editing copy and guiding investigative work. The ideal candidate should be collaborative in nature, able to shift gears quickly and also capable of juggling numerous projects at once. The editor also will be responsible for setting and implementing coverage strategy and directing the most effective storytelling methods, from video to audio to graphics to text. This position reports to the deputy editorial director for investigations, but the editor will work closely with all our vertical editors, going where the news demands.
This position is based in the United States or Canada.
Requirements
10+ years of experience in digital journalism, including at least five years of direct editorial and personnel management.
Proven mastery of copy editing, story structure and framing, style guidelines and journalistic standards, including accuracy, fairness and other critical values.
Expert ability to strengthen stories from inception to publication, and to collaborate with colleagues from multiple entry points.
Clear understanding of sensitive subjects and source vetting, with the ability to coach reporters and fellow editors in challenging journalistic situations.
Ability to collaborate and execute on top-level editorial vision of the newsroom, fitting practical needs with broader priorities.
Responsibilities
Lead The Athletic's push to continually deliver journalism that is the best in the industry and that reaches readers effectively.
Manage and direct a staff of writers toward the planning and publication of a significant number of stories each year.
Guide the writing and editing process with an emphasis on accuracy, clean copy, strong reporting, clear writing, sharp framing and timely publishing and updating for a wide variety of stories.
Collaborate with vertical editors, reporters and other areas of the newsroom.
Work to consistently lift the quality of our stories, to apply our standards and to coach our journalists to be rigorous, nimble and creative in their work.
Establish processes and priorities for a steady workflow.
Provide long-term direction for the team and strategic development for individual staff.
Maintain proficiency and knowledge of audience best practices, and in collaboration with our audience team strategize for stories on SEO, push alerts and placement opportunities for multiple platforms.
Oversee the vertical's financial budget and manage travel needs.
The annual base salary range for this role is $120,000.00 - $135,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
