Managing Consultants play a pivotal management role on the Advisory Services (AS) team, responsible for overseeing delivery of high-impact pro bono engagements, managing client relationships, and leading a team. As both people managers and client leads, Managing Consultants ensure the highest quality of service delivery, client satisfaction, and team development.
They contribute actively to the growth and sustainability of Taproot’s Advisory Services practice, advancing client relationships, supporting business development efforts across the full lifecycle, and achieving targets for renewal, expansion, and new client engagements. This role places particular emphasis on strategic program delivery, renewal and growth of existing client partnerships, people management, and insight generation across Taproot’s portfolio.
Managing Consultants are also expected to take an enterprise-wide perspective, contributing to cross-organizational initiatives and projects that strengthen Taproot’s strategy, operations, and overall impact.
Client Management
Own renewal and expansion conversations with existing client partners as part of long-term relationship stewardship and impact delivery.
Serve as the relationship manager for a portfolio of Advisory Services clients.
Oversee Advisory Services engagements, ensuring strong coordination with clients and internal teams to deliver high-impact work on time and within scope.
Act as a trusted advisor to corporate and nonprofit partners, identifying opportunities for growth and long-term collaboration.
People Management
Supervise and support the performance, development, and well-being of direct reports through regular coaching, goal setting, check-ins, and annual reviews; people management and team development are central to success in this role.
Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture grounded in trust, shared learning, and mutual accountability.
Oversee team workload, staffing, and utilization to ensure excellence in delivery, alignment with strategic priorities, and equitable distribution of work.
Provide strategic guidance and capacity-building support to help team members grow as leaders and contributors.
Balance individual development with organizational needs, ensuring career conversations are rooted in performance, contribution, and capacity.
Partner with senior leaders to align team goals, operations, and resourcing with broader organizational strategy.
Ensure work is effectively distributed across the team, especially during high-volume periods.
Model direct and effective delegation, assigning ownership of key responsibilities with clear expectations and timelines.
Program Delivery
Serve as the primary lead for a limited and complex portfolio of engagements, including program design, launch, facilitation, and reporting.
Ensure projects are high-quality, on time, within scope, and responsive to client and community needs.
Lead internal project teams, assigning roles, monitoring performance, and maintaining accountability.
Provide coaching and quality control on deliverables.
Monitor revenue recognition and report engagement data to the AS leadership team.
Use AI-driven insights to track project progress, analyze client data, and adjust deliverables for maximum impact, ensuring alignment with both client and community needs.
Business Development and Field Building
Lead multiple renewal and expansion conversations with existing client partners to deepen engagements, extend impact, and support the sustainability of Advisory Services, $100,000 - $250,00+. Respond to inbound business development opportunities and lead proposal development.
Actively contribute to business development across the lifecycle—from cultivating prospective clients to scoping engagements and securing new work.
Achieve targets related to client engagement renewals, expansions, and new client partnerships to support practice sustainability.
Support external visibility and influence by contributing to Taproot’s thought leadership efforts, such as case studies, webinars, and events.
Represent Taproot at conferences and community events.
Operations and Practice Building
Contribute to innovation and modernization of AS offerings by translating data, experience, and client feedback into actionable insights.
Contribute to systems and process improvements that support delivery, reporting, and team operations.
Identify and implement tools, templates, and process updates that enhance efficiency and consistency.
Lead or participate in AS team-wide learning initiatives.
Engage in cross-functional projects and organizational initiatives, bringing insights from Advisory Services to inform Taproot’s enterprise strategy and effectiveness.
Strategic Planning and Implementation
Participate in team planning and implementation of AS priorities.
Contribute to tracking and analyzing performance metrics to drive continuous improvement.
Offer insights and input on Taproot’s service delivery strategy and sector engagement to help evolve the practice over time.
Other Duties
Perform other responsibilities as assigned to support Advisory Services operations and Taproot’s broader organizational priorities.
This role requires occasional travel (up to 25%), as needed.

Manages: 3-5 direct reports (Consultants and/or Associates)
8-10+ years of relevant experience in consulting, advisory services, program management, CSR/philanthropy, or nonprofit capacity building, with increasing leadership responsibility.
Proven ability to lead complex, multi-stakeholder engagements or portfolios, ensuring high-quality delivery, strong prioritization, and accountability across teams.
Strong client relationship ownership, with experience serving as a trusted advisor to senior corporate and nonprofit partners.
Experience leading renewal and expansion of existing client partnerships, identifying opportunities to deepen impact over time (top-of-funnel business development is helpful but not required).
People management experience, including coaching, performance management, and team development, with a focus on inclusion and sustained performance.
Excellent facilitation, communication, and executive presence, comfortable leading high-stakes conversations with diverse audiences.
Strategic and analytical mindset, with the ability to synthesize data and insights to inform program, client, or practice evolution.
Comfort with ambiguity and change, bringing flexibility, judgment, and a bias toward progress in a fast-moving environment.
Technology-forward orientation, including curiosity about new tools (and AI) to improve efficiency, quality, and insight generation.
Alignment with Taproot’s mission and values, including pragmatic optimism, impact orientation, playful professionalism, and a commitment to equity and inclusion.
Starting salary range is $85,000 - $105,000 per year. Exact placement within the range is based on location and experience.
