Manager, Macro Strategy & Portfolio Insights

AI overview

Develop and scale macroeconomic intelligence for a global lending platform, providing actionable insights that anticipate risks and inform portfolio strategy across diverse markets.
About Tala At Tala, we’re applying advanced technology and human creativity to solve what legacy institutions can’t or won't. We are a global financial infrastructure company on a mission to unleash the economic power of the global majority, recognizing that today’s financial infrastructure doesn’t work for most of the world’s population. We’re the first and only platform to combine the intelligence of a credit bureau, the payments execution of a fintech, and the relationship expertise of a bank into one vertically integrated solution. Our platform is powered by an expansive moat of proprietary data and AI/ML decisioning technology, enabling us to deliver instant, reliable liquidity personalized to every customer's needs. Through our flagship credit app, we’ve disbursed over $7 billion in credit to more than 12 million customers across Latin America, Southeast Asia, and East Africa. These customers have leveraged Tala products to start and expand small businesses, manage day-to-day needs, and pursue their financial goals. Our pioneering work and proven impact have earned us consistent recognition, including being named to: CNBC’s Disruptor 50 for five years. CNBC’s World's Top Fintech Companies for two consecutive years. Forbes’ Fintech 50 list for nine consecutive years. Visionary investors, persuaded by the economic power of the global majority, have committed half a billion dollars in equity and debt to Tala's success. Given the global nature of our team, we operate on a remote-first approach with office hubs in Santa Monica, CA (HQ); Nairobi, Kenya; Mexico City, Mexico; Manila, the Philippines; and Bangalore, India. Most Talazens join us because they connect with our mission. If you are energized by the impact you can make at Tala, we’d love to hear from you! The Role We are seeking an impact-oriented Manager, Macro Strategy & Portfolio Insights to join Tala’s Risk organization. Reporting to the SVP of Risk, this role will be responsible for building and scaling Tala’s macroeconomic intelligence and forward-looking portfolio insight capabilities across our global lending markets. This individual will serve as a key thought partner to senior Risk, Product, Finance, and Data Science leaders by translating macroeconomic trends, market dynamics, and external signals into clear, actionable insights for portfolio strategy and risk planning. The role is focused on foresight, synthesis, and strategic insight, rather than day-to-day analytics execution or enterprise governance ownership. The ideal candidate brings strong economic intuition, analytical rigor, and the ability to operate in ambiguous environments—helping the organization anticipate risk, not just respond to it. What You'll Do
  • Macroeconomic & Market Intelligence
  • Monitor and synthesize macroeconomic (inflation, employment, FX, cost-of-living, liquidity) and customer behavioral trends across Tala’s international markets and translate them into implications for consumer behavior and portfolio risk
  • Track external market signals, regulatory developments, and competitive dynamics that may impact credit performance or lending strategy.
  • Develop country-level and segment-level macro narratives to support strategic planning and risk discussions.

  • Portfolio Foresight & Early Warning
  • Partner with Portfolio Risk, Data Science, and Analytics teams to identify leading indicators and early-warning signals that anticipate shifts in portfolio performance.
  • Support scenario analysis and sensitivity assessments to understand how macro shocks or structural changes may affect portfolio outcomes.
  • Provide forward-looking insights to inform adjustments to pricing, limits, tenors, and growth strategies

  • Strategic Insight & Cross-Functional Partnership
  • Produce concise, decision-relevant syntheses for senior stakeholders, helping Risk, Finance and Product leaders understand what matters now and what’s likely to matter next from the macroeconomic and customer behavior lenses
  • Partner with Product, Finance, Capital Markets, and Marketing to ensure macro context is embedded in portfolio strategy, funding discussions, and growth planning.
  • Support Credit Risk Committee and executive discussions by contributing macro and market-level insight

  • Thought Leadership & Enablement
  • Act as an internal subject-matter expert on macroeconomic and market dynamics affecting emerging-market consumer lending.
  • Help elevate the organization’s understanding of how external forces interact with credit performance, risk tradeoffs, and customer behavior.
  • Contribute to the development of repeatable frameworks for incorporating macro insight into portfolio strategy.
  • What You'll Need
  • 6–10+ years of experience in economics, consumer finance, risk strategy, or analytical roles, with exposure to emerging markets and/or underbanked consumer segments.
  • Strong grounding in macroeconomic principles and consumer behavior, with the ability to connect external trends to portfolio-level outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex data and signals into clear, executive-ready insights.
  • Solid analytical skillset and comfort working with data (e.g., SQL, Python, statistical analysis), with an emphasis on interpretation rather than model development.
  • Experience collaborating closely with Product, Risk, Finance, or Data Science teams in fast-moving environments.
  • Comfortable operating with imperfect data and applying sound judgment where information is incomplete.
  • Clear communicator with the ability to influence without formal decision authority.
  • Curious, proactive, and motivated by Tala’s mission to expand access to responsible financial services.
  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, statistics, engineering, or a related field (advanced degree a plus).
  • Our vision is to build a new financial ecosystem where everyone can participate on equal footing and access the tools they need to be financially healthy. We strongly believe that inclusion fosters innovation and we’re proud to have a diverse global team that represents a multitude of backgrounds, cultures, and experience. We hire talented people regardless of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
