We have an opening for a Maintenance Mechanic Shop Supervisor. You will supervise and provide technical and administrative guidance to a team of Maintenance Mechanics, manage and direct the day-to-day work activities of skilled trades by performing administrative functions to include establishing priorities, setting schedules, and coordinating work. The position is in the Mechanical Utilities Division within the Infrastructure Maintenance and Utilities Department.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

  • Supervise and coordinate the work of the various skilled trades engaged in the installation, repair, fabrication, alteration, operation and maintenance of plant facilities, utilities, and infrastructure.
  • Coordinate work with planners, schedulers, other shops, building and programmatic personnel; define scope of work, efforts required, and materials needed for work requests, schedule work assignments, solve problems and make decisions, ensure work is carried out safely and effectively, as scheduled and is of high quality.
  • Implement work control process by serving as a Responsible Individual RI/Work Supervisor responsible for day-to-day work activities of assigned matrix personnel ensuring that the work is performed in accordance with the Work Permit, Skill of the Craft and Competent Worker Qualifications.
  • Serve as the administrative supervisor responsible for performance evaluation/management, team building, timecard approval, training, and personnel actions that include participating in interviews, hiring decisions, discipline, dismissal, salary adjustments; interpret and apply LLNL policies and procedures pertaining to performance management and in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and LLNL ES&H requirements and policies.
  • Serve as a point of contact between management and team/shop workers and participate fully in management team decision-making and goal setting.
  • Establish goals and measurements for productivity in craft work processes and make appropriate adjustments.
  • Provide input in the investigation and completion of documents related to accidents/incidents soliciting technical advice from subject matter experts as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Extensive journey-level knowledge, abilities, and work experience in a relevant skilled trade or equivalent experience in facilities management, maintenance, or construction.
  • Technical, administrative, and supervisory skills and experience including independent decision making, problem solving, workload scheduling, and workforce utilization.
  • Experience interpreting and implementing personnel policies and procedures, disciplinary actions, and complete performance appraisals.
  • Experience providing effective direction and adjusting work activities to meet changing requirements as well as motivate, train, develop and provide guidance with an emphasis on teamwork.
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant and applicable federal, state, and local codes, laws, and regulations.
  • Extensive advanced knowledge and specialized skills in the application of safety policies and regulations, administrative, supervisory, equipment and tools training.
  • Effective interpersonal communication and customer service skills to facilitate collaborative interaction between maintenance mechanics and technical/administrative personnel, including the ability to interact in writing and verbally with all levels of technical, administrative and management personnel.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and office software, using tools such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases to efficiently complete tasks and manage information
  • Ability to work scheduled and emergency overtime work, including off-hours on-call rotation, and be able to work all shifts and in all buildings and areas of the Laboratory, including Site 300.
  • Valid California driver’s license.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Knowledge of the function and operation of typical security policies and procedures for nuclear, sensitive, or limited-access facilities.
  • Experience leading and managing teams in a 24/7 operational environment with multiple shifts (e.g., three shifts per day), including responsibility for staffing, performance, and shift handover processes. 
  • Proven success in driving a workplace enhancement initiative such as equipment modernization, operational excellence, worker engagement, preventive maintenance management system rollout, safety culture improvement, or similar program.
