Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Microsoft 365 Architect to provide enterprise-level strategic guidance, architectural oversight, and governance support for a large-scale IRS modernization effort. This role requires a strong understanding of Microsoft’s cloud ecosystem and the ability to shape long-term platform direction across multiple business lines.

The Architect will define standards, drive design decisions, ensure compliance, and guide the successful delivery of solutions across Microsoft 365 services—Power Platform, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, Exchange Online, AvePoint, and Microsoft Copilot.



Key Responsibilities

Enterprise Architecture & Strategic Direction

  • Define and maintain the overarching architectural vision for the IRS Microsoft 365 environment.
  • Provide expert guidance on platform capabilities, solution patterns, integration approaches, and long-term modernization strategy.
  • Ensure solutions align with organizational objectives, security requirements, and future-state target architectures.

Governance & Standards Leadership

  • Lead the development and refinement of governance frameworks for M365 adoption, usage, configuration, and security.
  • Establish architectural standards, templates, patterns, and best practices for teams across the program.
  • Ensure compliance with IRS policies, federal security requirements, and industry standards.

Solution Review & Technical Oversight

  • Review proposed solutions and designs to ensure architectural alignment and scalability.
  • Provide authoritative recommendations on complex issues, platform constraints, and cross-system integrations.
  • Conduct technical assessments and propose improvements to elevate system reliability and enterprise value.

Program Alignment & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with leadership, PMs, engineers, and business stakeholders to drive cohesive planning and execution.
  • Provide architectural input across multiple concurrent initiatives and ensure consistent adoption of standards.
  • Communicate architectural direction and technical decisions to both technical and executive stakeholders.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities for modernization, automation, and AI-driven enhancements.
  • Guide the responsible adoption of emerging M365 capabilities—including Microsoft Copilot and Power Platform advancements.
  • Evaluate architecture health and propose continuous improvement strategies.



Qualifications

  • Extensive experience as an architect supporting enterprise-scale Microsoft 365 environments.
  • Deep understanding of M365 platform architecture, integration patterns, governance, and security.
  • Ability to develop and communicate architectural visions, roadmaps, and standards.
  • Experience supporting federal government programs (preferred).
  • Strong communication, leadership, and decision-making skills.
  • Relevant certifications such as Microsoft 365 Certified: Enterprise Administrator Expert (preferred).
