We are looking for a curious, determined, and high-performing individual to join our team as a Litigation Counsel to provide legal advice and lead and manage U.S. litigation and other disputes to support global legal, IP, and licensing strategy and implementation for global commercial, R&D, and functional strategies, and to lead and manage significant litigation and arbitration activities within the United States.

Accountabilities:

  • Provide legal advice and manage litigation and legal claims for the U.S. crop protection and seeds business.
  • Help ensure development and implementation of good litigation practices, including electronic discovery, litigation hold, and similar litigation-related processes.
  • Proactively engage with business units and functional groups to provide advice and counseling on risk management and to assist in connection with potential liability assessments and claims.
  • Effectively manage outside counsel and their fees and costs.
  • Provide a wide range of legal guidance and advice and develop and implement an efficient and effective legal program that minimizes risk while partnering with business units to develop business strategies.
  • Lead development and implementation of legal, IP, and licensing strategies within area of responsibility, including in some cases leading a team of ALIP professionals.
  • Manage day-to-day complex legal matters for which sound legal judgment, experience, and independent reasoning are required.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of product liability and tort law and litigation practices, including electronic discovery.
  • J.D. degree from a top law school with strong academic credentials, and active member of a U.S. state bar in good standing with the ability to practice law in-house in North Carolina.
  • 5+ years of litigation experience in a law firm, government, or in the litigation department of an in-house legal department.
  • Strong knowledge of litigation procedures and strategies, electronic discovery, and substantive tort and product liability law.
  • Experience or knowledge of agriculture, biotech, or the chemicals industry and U.S. regulatory framework (especially USDA and EPA) would be beneficial.
  • Experience researching and drafting discovery motions, dispositive motions, and other pretrial and trial or arbitration filings.
  • Experience with mediations and settlement negotiations.
  • Trial experience is helpful.
  • Experience with pursuing insurance recoveries for defense costs and potential litigation liabilities is a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong analytical and strategic thinking and analysis; excellent interpersonal, influencing, and negotiation skills; organizational skills; strong business orientation; ability to multitask and work independently in a proactive, self-directed manner.
  • Strong ability to set direction and deliver and manage performance at a high level.
  • Must be able to effectively collaborate across different business groups and functions across a large, multinational organization.
  • Maturity and presence to work with and advise senior executives.
  • Up to approximately 10% primarily domestic Travel
