We have an opening for a Flight Test Analysis Group Leader supporting the LLNL Independent Diagnostic Scoring System (LIDSS) program. LIDSS provides unique diagnostic, data analysis and scoring capabilities for NNSA and DoD weapons sustainment, modernization, and development programs through advanced analysis of flight test data.

The Analysis Group provides timely, accurate, and actionable analytic products to program sponsors and stakeholders. These deliverables include scoring reports, memos, comprehensive written analyses, and materials that support mission planning and follow-up activities.

The successful candidate will lead a team of analysts in developing new methodologies, maintaining high-quality deliverables, and advancing the state-of-the-art in data analysis and processing. This position has both programmatic and line responsibilities in the Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) Program and the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), respectively.

Depending on your assignment, this position may offer a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week. 

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

  • Provide technical leadership, supervision, and strategic and administrative direction, guidance, and support in the planning and execution of multiple simultaneous projects to a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers.
  • Monitor and direct project performance to ensure milestones and deliverables are met, exercising independent judgment and latitude in establishing project objectives and allocating resources, guiding and balancing workload, assigning work, managing project scope and schedule, and obtaining ongoing performance feedback.
  • Serve as the primary LIDSS point of contact for all analytic deliverables, ensuring timely and accurate delivery of reports, slide decks, data reviews, and analyses to sponsors.
  • Support the professional growth of analytic staff by assigning meaningful work, conducting career development discussions, and helping team members set and achieve attainable goals.
  • Prioritize and delegate mission tasks to junior analysts, assigning lead roles, balancing workloads, and ensuring consistency through cross-validation of scoring efforts.
  • Mentor and train new analysts in software tools, analytic methodologies, and best practices to maintain high-quality deliverables.
  • Lead development initiatives to improve LIDSS software tools, maintain configuration management archives, and enhance data processing capabilities.
  • Advance complex sensor data quality by developing methods to capture additional valuable data not currently collected.
  • Deliver technical briefings to sponsors and customers, providing advanced technical analysis and recommendations, while creating opportunities for junior staff to co-present and build confidence in external communications.
  • Drive innovation in data processing by developing new methodologies, evaluating emerging algorithms, and proactively adapting to evolving program needs.
  • Represent the interests of group members during organizational alignment activities, provide career guidance tailored to individual strengths and aspirations, and foster a growth mindset by delivering constructive feedback and supporting professional development.
  • Identify and address staffing and capability gaps by participating in recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding of new analysts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.4 level 

  • Influence strategic decisions made by senior management and external sponsors/customers through expert recommendations and analysis, contributing to strategic planning efforts for long range goals, and identifying new opportunities.
  • Lead and develop advancements in cutting-edge analytic methodologies, software tools, and data processing capabilities that may impact the Laboratory and broader national security community.
  • Function as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for LIDSS analysis, providing highly advanced technical leadership and guidance on analytic deliverables and methodologies, and solutions to highly complex or unusual problems.
  • Collaborate with LIDSS senior leadership and sponsors and participate in efforts to identify areas for continued technology development, and assist in submitting proposals or presentations to secure necessary funding for proposed initiatives.
  • Advise on the most highly complex and sensitive analytic issues, performing in-depth analysis, using innovative methods, modifying approaches, and leading the development and implementation efforts of new programs and/or policies that impact major portions of the Laboratory.
  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top-Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Advanced analytical skills and knowledge of, and significant experience with physical system modeling, software development, and imaging techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge and significant experience with Java, MATLAB, Python, and C/C++.
  • Significant experience and demonstrated ability in effectively leading small technical teams and working collaboratively to solve complex, multidisciplinary problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate, explain, and present complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Significant experience in project leadership and working effectively in cross-disciplinary environments utilizing adaptability and detail-oriented skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently as required.

Additional qualifications at the SEL.4 level

  • Extensive experience developing and monitoring performance required to meet programmatic milestones and deliverables.
  • Expert level written and verbal communication, facilitation, collaboration, and negotiation skills necessary to effectively present, explain, advise, and influence senior management and stakeholders, and to interact with people at all levels.
  • Extensive experience making independent decisions regarding highly variable technical problems and demonstrated ability to develop strategies and actions to generate solutions in response to diverse, significant, and unique analytical challenges.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master's Degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience with advanced data analysis, modeling, and simulation for flight test diagnostics.
  • Experience developing and fielding diagnostic scoring systems for national security applications.
  • Advanced experience in software development, configuration management, and sensor data processing.
  • Experience mentoring and developing technical staff in analytic roles.
