The Team

We are a group of vibrant, diverse people who love travelling and never settle on quality. Each one of us didn’t join Welcome by chance and believes deeply in what Welcome is trying to achieve, so we work relentlessly to make that happen. We challenge common logic, focus on design, put simplicity and usability first, and create memorable experiences. We keep learning and exploring better ways to serve our community and grow personally and professionally in our respective fields. We stay humble along the way, with a “pay it forward” mentality, but with big and bold goals.

About the Role

As our Legal & Compliance Officer, you will be the sole architect and manager of Welcome's legal and compliance frameworks. Responsible for both high-level legal strategy and day-to-day guidance, you’ll shape a solid legal foundation, ensuring that we stay compliant, minimize risk, and position the company for sustainable growth. Reporting directly to the Internal Operations Director, you’ll be integral in navigating complex regulatory landscapes, supporting major business transactions, handling employment-related legalities, and advising leadership at all levels on critical legal matters.

Responsibilities

  • Legal Leadership & Strategic Advisory: Serve as the primary legal contact, providing strategic legal insights to all departments, including executive leadership, and ensuring that Welcome's interests are protected. Proactively counsel on legal risks and opportunities to support informed, strategic decision-making across the organization.
  • Comprehensive Contract & Transactional Oversight: Draft, review, and negotiate an array of contracts—from commercial agreements and partnerships to employment and vendor contracts. Work to safeguard the company’s interests in all major deals, including expansion initiatives, partnerships, and potential exit events.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Monitoring: Lead the development, implementation, and refinement of policies to ensure compliance with all applicable laws, particularly in transportation and data privacy, while supporting cross-border expansion efforts. Provide legal guidance on regulatory requirements in new regions, collaborating with local experts to integrate compliance seamlessly into diverse legal landscapes. Stay vigilant on evolving laws and regulations, adapting procedures as needed, and maintaining a transparent registry to track compliance metrics across all jurisdictions.
  • Risk Management & Preventive Strategy: Formulate and enforce risk mitigation strategies to prevent legal liabilities. Develop action plans for high-risk areas, addressing potential issues proactively and supporting departments in understanding legal implications for business decisions.
  • Employment Law & Workplace Legalities: Oversee and advise on all employment-related legal aspects, ensuring compliance with labor laws across all jurisdictions we operate in. Address employment issues effectively, providing guidance on internal policies, workplace conflicts, and other HR legal matters.
  • Incident Management & Resolution: Investigate and resolve any legal-related incidents, violations, or complaints. Work closely with relevant departments to implement corrective actions, mitigating risk and safeguarding the company’s reputation.
  • Data Privacy Compliance: Lead efforts to ensure compliance with data privacy regulations, implementing robust processes to protect personal and company data. Regularly assess and update data handling practices to maintain security, align with evolving privacy standards, and uphold the organization’s commitment to data integrity.
  • Legal Documentation & Process Optimisation: Maintain and enhance our repository of legal templates and documentation. Regularly review legal processes for clarity, efficiency, and alignment with best practices, making continuous improvements as needed.
  • External Partnerships: Cultivate relationships with external legal experts to secure specialized support when required, ensuring swift access to expertise on complex legal matters.

  • Master’s in Commercial or International Business Law
  • 4+ years of experience in an in-house legal role, ideally in an international environment
  • CIPP-E certification (preferred)
  • Business Acumen: Strong grounding in corporate and transportation law, with a strategic approach to balancing legal risk and business growth.
  • Strategic & Analytical Mindset: Proactively anticipates challenges and develops solutions that align with short- and long-term objectives.
  • Effective Communication: Skilled at building strong relationships and simplifying complex legal concepts for diverse audiences.
  • Problem-Solving & Resilience: Handles sensitive issues and high-stakes situations calmly, with adaptability and resourcefulness.
  • Integrity & Ethical Standards: High commitment to transparency, trust, and a collaborative working environment.
