Lead the regulatory approval processes for autonomous vehicles in Europe while defining the homologation strategy and managing compliance with EU and UN-ECE regulations.
WeRide.ai is looking for a Lead Homologation Engineer to support autonomous vehicles' commercial deployment in global markets, with focus on Europe. This role reports directly to the company's senior leadership team. The level depends on the candidate's experience and qualification.
What you will do:
Lead our certification and regulatory approval processes for autonomous vehicles in Europe and other global markets. This role requires deep expertise in European vehicle regulations—especially those governing automated driving systems (ADS), including EU Regulation 1426, the General Safety Regulation (GSR), UN-ECE regulations, and national approval pathways across EU Member States.
Serve as the company’s internal authority on vehicle type-approval requirements and ensure our autonomous vehicle platforms meet all applicable European legislative, safety, and testing standards. Align engineering development with regulatory requirements.
Serve as the company's main interface with regulators, their technical services, municipal officials, and industry partners on discussions related to regulatory compliance.
Interpret and apply EU and UN-ECE regulatory frameworks, including:
-EU Regulation 1426 (ADS technical rules)
-EU General Safety Regulation (GSR) and associated delegated acts
-UN-ECE regulations such as R155 (cybersecurity), R156 (software updates), and any ADS-related amendments
-Type-approval processes under EU Framework Regulation (EU) 2018/858
Manage vehicle type-approval submissions, ensuring technical documentation, testing, and reporting are complete and compliant.
Coordinate testing and validation required for certification—functional safety, cybersecurity, ADS performance, and environmental standards
Monitor emerging regulations, delegated acts, Euro NCAP scenarios, and guidance documents related to ADS and connected vehicles; advise leadership on regulatory strategy.
Support market-entry planning by mapping requirements across targeted European countries.
Lead internal audits and compliance reviews to maintain approval status throughout vehicle lifecycle.
Function as a lead individual contributor at the beginning, build up the homologation team as business needs grow
Requirements:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (Automotive, Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, or related field).
5+ years of experience in vehicle homologation, type approval, or regulatory engineering, with at least 2 years focusing on automated or advanced driver-assistance systems.
Expert-level knowledge of European automotive regulations, including:
-EU 1426 and other autonomous-vehicle regulations
-EU 2018/858, GSR, safety and environmental directives
-UN-ECE R155, R156, and related ADS regulations
Hands-on experience preparing and managing type-approval documentation.
Direct interaction with technical services and approval authorities in Europe.
Strong understanding of automotive safety engineering (ISO 26262, SOTIF/ISO 21448) and cybersecurity processes.
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, able to drive alignment across highly technical and non-technical audiences
Fluent Chinese (Mandarin) and English are a must
Flexibility to work with teams in different time zones
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in homologating Level 3+ automated driving systems.
Prior work in a self-driving, robotics, or advanced automotive technology company.
Knowledge of national AV regulatory frameworks (e.g., Germany’s AFGBV, French experimental frameworks).
