Summary

Client is seeking a Design Lead to support the Enterprise Web Initiative (EWI) for regions outside the United States (OUS), with a primary focus on Europe. EWI is Lilly’s centralized platform and operating model that enables teams across the enterprise to create, manage, and scale digital web experiences.

This role is critical to ensuring that all EMEA and global OUS enterprise websites are brand-consistent, elevated, accessible, localized, and unified under the Lilly Direct brand ecosystem while meeting regional regulatory and compliance requirements. The Design Lead will translate enterprise brand and experience strategy into high-quality execution, guiding designers day-to-day while partnering closely with Design Directors, Product, Engineering, and regional business stakeholders.

This role blends hands-on design leadership, governance, and mentorship, ensuring that every site created through EWI reflects Lilly’s standards for trust, clarity, compliance, and user-centered design in a highly regulated, global environment.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Lead the day-to-day design execution for OUS and EMEA enterprise web initiatives, guiding designers to deliver high-quality, compliant, and brand-aligned digital experiences.
  • Partner with Design Directors to translate enterprise brand vision and Lilly Direct standards into scalable, regionally appropriate design solutions for EWI-managed websites.
  • Ensure all websites created through EWI maintain consistent visual design, interaction patterns, accessibility, and content hierarchy aligned with Lilly’s global brand system while supporting localization and multilingual needs.
  • Support the end-to-end design process—from intake and requirements refinement through concept, design, review, localization, and launch—within an enterprise web governance model.
  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering to scope features, prioritize work, and resolve design challenges, balancing speed, scalability, and quality across regions and time zones.
  • Advocate for user-centered design, accessibility, and usability best practices, including WCAG and relevant European accessibility standards (e.g., EN 301 549), particularly for healthcare and patient-facing content.
  • Ensure designs align with regional regulatory and privacy requirements, including GDPR and local market compliance, in partnership with Legal and Compliance teams.
  • Uphold and evolve design systems, component libraries, UI patterns, and templates used across EWI to enable rapid, consistent, and localized site creation.
  • Provide mentorship, constructive feedback, and design direction to individual contributors, helping grow design craft and enterprise design maturity across global teams.
  •  Act as a design quality gate, ensuring work meets Lilly brand, regulatory, localization, and experience standards prior to delivery.

CORE COMPETENCIES

  • Strong enterprise design leadership, with the ability to translate high-level brand and experience strategy into repeatable, scalable execution across regions.
  • Exceptional cross-functional communication skills, working effectively with global design, product, engineering, compliance, and business stakeholders.
  • Deep expertise in web design, design systems, accessibility, and user-centered design within complex or regulated global environments.
  • Strong understanding of localization, multilingual design, and cultural considerations for European and global audiences.
  • Proven ability to mentor and guide designers while remaining hands-on in execution when needed.
  • Strong judgment and attention to detail, ensuring polished, cohesive experiences at enterprise scale.

REQUIRED EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in design, Interaction Design, Visual Communication, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field. Equivalent practical experience will be considered.

EXPERIENCE

  • 10+ years of experience in digital, product, or web design, with demonstrated success delivering enterprise-scale and international web experiences.
  • Experience leading or guiding designers within design systems or platform-based environments.
  • Proven collaboration with product managers, engineers, and leadership to define requirements and deliver compliant, scalable solutions.
  • Experience working within regulated industries (e.g., healthcare, life sciences, or pharmaceuticals) strongly preferred.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating brand-driven, scalable, and localized web design execution.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Additional European language proficiency is a plus but not required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Accomplished design practitioner with a strong track record of delivering enterprise-quality, global digital experiences.
  • Skilled at turning brand strategy, governance, and regulatory requirements into actionable design solutions.
  • Collaborative, empathetic leader who provides clear, constructive feedback across cultures and regions.
  • Comfortable balancing hands-on design work, mentorship, and strategic alignment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to support business, brand, regulatory, and user needs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Standard office or remote work conditions; no unusual physical requirements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Highly collaborative and fast-paced. Works with global cross-functional teams across Digital, Product, Engineering, Compliance, and regional stakeholders. Focused on scalable delivery, quality, localization, and continuous improvement within enterprise web operations.
