Internship Thermal Combustion

AI overview

Engage in various challenging internships within the Thermal combustion department, focusing on sustainable energy projects that enhance operational efficiency.

For the Thermal combustion department we are looking for interns! The following internships / graduation assignments are available. Apply using the apply button and select the (graduation) internship you are interested in.

The internships on this page are:

1: Design new flue gas condenser;
2: Boiler ash removal system;
3: Calculation tools:
4: High pressure sootblowing.

1 Design new flue gas condenser

Suitable for BSc and MSc in Mechanical Engineering / Sustainable Energy

HoSt Thermal Technology B.V. realises biomass fired power plants in which fuel is converted into renewable energy via combusting. A flue gas condenser, located downstream a boiler, can increase the overall efficiency of the plant by extracting additional condensation heat from the flue gas. The heat will be transferred to a low temperature cooling circuit. HoSt has several flue gas condensers in own operation and has knowledge and experience with them. The objective of this assignment is to develop a new design for the flue gas condenser, based on another working principle.

Your tasks:

  • Familiarise with all components and the main design of a biomass plant;

  • Study and evaluate existing flue gas condenser systems;

  • Make a design for the new flue gas condenser;

  • Produce the required calculations, drawings, and report;

  • Present the new design within the team.

2 Boiler ash removal system

Suitable for BSc and MSc in Mechanical Engineering / Sustainable Energy

HoSt Thermal Technology B.V. realises projects in which fuel is converted into renewable energy. Fly-ash collected in the bottom hopper of the boiler is automatically removed by a screw system to a wet ash conveyor. Sometimes some blockages do occur at the transition part between the screw system and the wet ash conveyor, where the dry fly-ash is falling on the water inside the wet ash conveyor. The fly-ash becomes sticky and cloggy in the moist/damped environment. Main goal of this assignment is to investigate the problem at our own plants and to improve the design of the fly-ash removal system.

Your tasks:

  • Familiarise with all components and the main design of a biomass plant;

  • Study and evaluate existing boiler ash removal system;

  • Improve the design of the boiler ash removal system;

  • Produce the required drawings and report;

  • Present the new design within the team.

3 Calculation tools

Suitable for BSc and MSc in Mechanical Engineering / Chemical Engineering / Sustainable Energy

HoSt Thermal Technology B.V. realises projects in which fuel is converted into renewable energy. During the design phase of projects, several basic and detailed calculations are made. Mainly for process designing. Main goal of this assignment is to produce new design tools/sheets and to extend/improve existing ones to support our engineers

Your tasks:

  • Familiarise with all components and the main design of a biomass plant;

  • Study and evaluate existing calculation methods and sheets;

  • Develop/improve calculation tools, special focus shall be on the heat- and material balance, flow, and pressure (drop) calculations;

  • Produce the required calculations, drawings, and report;

  • Present the new design within the team.

4 High pressure sootblowing

Suitable for BSc and MSc in Mechanical Engineering / Chemical Engineering / Sustainable Energy

HoSt Thermal Technology B.V. realises projects in which fuel is converted into renewable energy. The availability of plants is increased by automatic air or steam sootblowing systems, which do clean periodically (approx. every 24 hours) on-line the heating surface of a water tube boiler. This requires a lot of high pressurized air during only a very short period of sootblowing time (few minutes). Making of high pressurized air is costly. Main goal of this assignment is to design an economic optimal combination of high pressure compressor and air storage tank.

Your tasks:

  • Familiarise with all components and the main design of a biomass plant;

  • Study and evaluate existing sootblowing systems;

  • Design a high pressure sootblowing system;

  • Produce the required drawings, and report;

  • Present the new design within the team.
