In Farmington Hills, Michigan, the focus is on Powertrain and eDrive technology as well as in Long Beach, where the teams test durability of the latest driver assistant and telematic systems. The Digital Hub in Seattle focusses on developing a cloud architecture and building out the cloud platform for the next generation of connected car services. The Testing and Regulatory Affairs Division in Ann Arbor and the Advanced Vehicle Design in Carlsbad complete the competence center.

The UX Design team at our Mercedes-Benz Research and Development North America Design Center in Carlsbad, California is seeking a highly motivated intern to help us push the boundaries of digital prototyping.

We are a team of digital product designers and engineers that work at the intersection of physical and digital experiences going into future generations of Mercedes-Benz cars. We design visually stunning user interfaces and create exceptional experiences for in-vehicle and mobile use including wearables. In this 4 month internship, you will be part of a diverse and multi-disciplinary team that strives to invent the future of automotive experiences. You will support the iteractive design process from first concepts and sketches to high-end prototypes featuring the latest technologies e.g. AR/VR, game engines.

Job Responsibilities:

  • You are fluent in rapid prototyping tools and relevant programming languages. You are an expert in game engines and have experience working with 2D/3D design tools.
  • Contribute to ideation, design development and prototyping for digital user interfaces in the car, mobile devices and wearables
  • Help the team build interactive prototypes from low to high fidelity
  • Support the team with asset creation (2D/3D) and implementation in prototypes
  • Research latest SW and HW technologies to achieve goals faster
  • Educate team about latest trends and techniques in digital prototyping
  • Support presentations for key stakeholders and executives

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a 4 Year University seeking a Bachelor’s Degree in Interactive, Entertainment, Media Design or Computer Science with a focus on interactive experiences
  • Excellent 3D skills: Cinema 4D, Maya, Blender + Render engines (Redshift, Arnold, Octane)
  • Experience working with Game Engines: Unreal Engine, Unity
  • Good knowledge of design tools: Adobe Creative Cloud, Sketch
  • Basic knowledge of programming languages: C#, C++, Python
  • Creativity with a positive attitude
  • Proactive problem solver and strong communicator, team player
  • Project experience in UX Design
  • Working on-site on a regular basis is required
  • Frequent use of speech, vision, hearing, use of hands for computer use and presentations
  • Frequent sitting, standing and reaching with hands

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expert knowledge of programming languages: C#, C++, Python and others
  • Hardware prototyping knowledge: Arduino, 3D printing, Laser cutting
  • Familiarity with Human-Centered-Design process

The current hourly rate for this position is as follows and may be modified in the future: $28 (Undergraduate Students)
